Wrestling Finishes Seventh Overall at NWCA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Augustana wrestling closed the weekend with a seventh-place finish at the NWCA/USMC Multi-Division National Duals, falling to No. 3 Parkside and defeating No. 11 University of Mary on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings now hold a 5-5 record at the conclusion of the weekend.

In the Vikings' lone win of the dual, Josh Wagener kicked things off at 174 with a takedown in the first 10 seconds. Despite giving up three escapes through the first two periods, Wagener would add in three more takedowns and an escape of his own before the final two minutes. He fended off a late rally from Brady Schuh and tallied a reversal to go up 15-10, but he called the match and pinned his opponent.

At 125, Jaxson Rohman kicked things off in the 7th/8th place dual with a takedown. He headed into the third period still hanging on to a 3-1 lead and added in an escape, takedown and a bonus point for riding time to claim the 8-2 decision.
 
Connor Whiteley kept it going at 141, dominantly taking control with three takedowns to carry a 9-2 after the first period. He continued to press on the gas, tallying two takedowns and an escape in the second with another takedown in the third, taking the 19-4 tech fall.
 
With two takedowns, a two-point nearfall and escape, Cael Larson held onto a 9-4 lead after the first three minutes. He added in two total escapes in the next two periods and fended off a takedown and escape from Trae Thilmony to hold on for the 11-9 decision.
 
Connor Simmonds put on a clinic at 157, quickly ending his match within the first period. He logged a takedown and three four-point nearfalls in the first three minutes alone, securing the 15-0 tech fall in stunning fashion.
 
Following a scoreless first period at 165, Payton Handevidt scored his first points off a takedown to take a 3-1 lead. The match was a locked-tight battle and resulted in an early escape in the third period for Handevidt, making it a 4-1 decision for AU.
 
Coy Gunderson continued the control for the Vikings at 174 pounds, logging 10 points in the first period off two takedowns and a four-point nearfall. Despite a takedown from Joey Mushinsky, Gunderson added an escape and a last-second takedown to earn the 14-4 major decision.
 
With the only points in the first period coming in the form of a takedown, Cade Mueller held a 3-0 advantage going into the third. He immediately rattled off an escape and soon tallied a takedown and an extra point for ride time, ending the match at 184 with an 8-1 decision.
 
Max Ramberg steadily held control of his competition at 197 pounds, adding a takedown in each of the periods while also collecting an escape and an extra point of riding time to convincingly take the 11-1 major decision.
