MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Augustana Vikings saw a late lead slip away, falling 89-80 in overtime to the MSU Moorhead Dragons on Friday night inside Nemzek Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the Vikings fall to 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the NSIC while the Dragons jump to 12-7, 7-6.Â
Tanner Te Slaa collected a double double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while shooting 4 of 5 from deep.
Bennett Fried scored 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting and corralled seven rebounds.
Tameron Ferguson continued his strong freshman campaign with 12 points, eight assists and five steals and
Kelton Coleman scored 13 points and brought in six rebounds off the bench.Â
Through 5:18 of game time, the Vikings led 10-9 after a dominant start from Fried and Ferguson. Fried scored on his first three shots while Ferguson made his first two to account for all 10 points. Ferguson made himself a distributor in the early stages as well, assisting on all three Fried shots.Â
The Dragons took the lead with a layup on their next possession and
Conner Kraft took it right back with a 3-pointer off the bench to give the Vikings a 13-11 lead with 13:02 to play in the half. A 6-0 MSUM run gave them the lead right back but four straight Te Slaa points evened the score at 17-17 midway through the half.Â
The two teams alternated scores until an MSUM free throw put them ahead by four with 5:09 left in the half. Te Slaa came back with a 3-pointer and the teams resumed their bucket trading from there. Te Slaa closed the scoring in the half when he knocked down three free throws with 34 seconds to go to bring AU to a 34-33 deficit at the break.Â
An 11-2 run to open the second half catapulted the Dragons in front 45-35 within the first three minutes. An Akoi and-one and Te Slaa 3-pointer sandwiched a Dragon jumper to extinguish the run and bring the Vikings within 47-41 with 15:32 remaining.Â
With MSUM holding its six point lead at the 13:19 mark, Coleman took action. Back-to-back jumpers and a layup evened the scoring and Ferguson canceled out an MSUM layup with a jumper to keep the game tied at 53-53.Â
A 4-0 run for the Dragons recaptured a lead but a Coleman 3-pointer and Ferguson layup put the Vikings in front 58-57 with 8:56 to go. After a pair of Dragon free throws,
Conner Kraft cleaned up the offensive glass with a layup and Coleman got back on the scoresheet with a layup to take a 62-59 lead with 5:55 left. 14 consecutive scoring plays alternated to keep the Vikings in front by three with less than a minute remaining but an MSUM and-one with 28 seconds to play sent the game into overtime.Â
In the extra frame, the Dragons ran away with a 13-2 run in the first four minutes to go ahead double digits. Within that final minute, AU scored eight points and MSUM scored six to bring the game to its final score.Â
The Vikings return to the court on Saturday afternoon, taking on Minnesota Crookston at 3:30 p.m.
