High Scoring Affair Ends in Viking Hockey Victory

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana hockey team (15-7-3, 7-3-1 CCHA) fought back from a one-goal deficit to defeat Lake Superior State (9-14-2, 7-9-1 CCHA) by a score of 6-3 on Friday night inside Midco Arena. The Vikings' win propelled them to first place in the CCHA standings. 

Luke Mobley opened up the scoring early with a power play goal in his 150th career game as he fired a one-timer off a pass from Easton Young. The Lakers answered back shortly after with a power play goal of its own from Jacob Conrad. LSSU continued its momentum with a go-ahead goal from Luke Levandowski. Lake Superior State's lead lasted less than a minute as Evan McIntyre found Simon Falk for a back door tap-in to net the game at 2-2. After seven minutes of play in the first period, Nate Schweitzer took the lead for the Lakers as he helped them take a one-goal lead into the second. Augustana outshot Lake Superior State 11-10 in the opening 20 minutes of play.  

It took just over seven minutes of play in the second period for Augustana to tie the game at 4-4 as Colton Friesen wired home his fifth of the season. Augustana got its second power play opportunity shortly after its fourth goal of the game but Rorke Applebee helped keep the game tied. With just over a minute to play in the second period, Young rifled in his third of the season from the point to push Augustana's lead to one. The second period belonged to the Vikings as it outshot the Lakers 16-7.

Augustana continued its momentum into the third period as Tyler Hennen collected his fifth of the season off a rebound from Hayden Hennen's shot from the point. The Lakers looked to make a comeback in the later moments of the period but Josh Kotai shut down every opportunity it had. Payton Matsui sealed the Vikings win with his sixth of the season on an empty cage. 

Augustana's program-high six goals helped secure its 15th win of the season and propelled them to first place in the CCHA standings.

  • Matsui sealed the Vikings' win with an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining in the third period.
