SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 14-ranked Augustana wrestling team opened their home slate on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 11 Central Oklahoma 28-12 in the Elmen Center.
After dropping the first three matches,
Nolan Ambrose brought the crowd to their feet in the third period of his match at 149 pounds. After an early takedown but trailing most of the match, Ambrose flipped the script with a reversal and stick early in the third to earn a pin, getting Augustana on the board.
Following the intermission,
Payton Handevidt showed why he is ranked at 165 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Handevidt collected an escape and pin in the second period en route to a 4-1 lead. After allowing an escape, he put the icing on the cake with a takedown to close out a 7-2 decision.
In the most explosive match of the day,
Coy Gunderson earned a signature victory with a 12-9 decision over No. 9-ranked Hunter Jump. Gunderson picked up a pair of takedowns in the first period and another in the second to take a 9-3 lead into the third. Jump was able to record a pair of takedowns in the third and Gunderson tallied three escapes while avoiding a tying takedown to earn the win.
