Caden Hinker scored a career-high in points while he and
Tameron Ferguson each recorded a double double as the Augustana men's basketball team won 84-68 against Winona State on Thursday night at the Elmen Center.
Hinker scored 26 points while going 9 of 15 from the field and 6 of 8 from deep. He also added 11 rebounds for his sixth double double of the season. Ferguson was on triple double watch early, settling for 16 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds while adding two steals and going 3 of 4 from deep.
Sam Rensch went 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 from deep on his way to 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and a team-high three steals.
Bennett Fried added 10 points while
Tanner Te Slaa had six points and
Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola had five points off the bench.
The Vikings (7-4,5-1 NSIC) shot 44.4 percent from the field and 15 of 33 from deep while the Warriors (3-8, 2-4) shot 41.9 from the field and turned it over nine times to the five of AU. The Vikings also outscored WSU 7-0 on the fast break and 17-0 off turnovers.
The Warriors led for the first seven minutes of action before Ferguson knocked down a 3-pointer and
Jack Hastreiter followed with one of his own to lead 13-11 at the 12:55 mark in the first half. WSU led by as many as four after that, taking a 26-22 lead with 8:42 to play in the half.
It was Hinker's game from there as he knocked down a pair of three's and a pair of free throws for his own 8-0 run to give AU a lead again at 30-26. After a timeout, WSU scored nine straight points to reclaim a lead at 35-30.
Te Slaa ended the run with a jumper while Fried scored the four points following and Hinker knocked down another 3-pointer to grow the lead to 39-35. The teams split the next 10 points in the final 1:30 of play, capped by a Hinker 3-pointer, to take a 44-40 lead into the half.
The first 7:28 of the second half dragged out as the Vikings held a 55-49 advantage. Ferguson sparked a run with an and-one and Fried knocked down a pair of free throws to grow the lead to 11. Te Slaa added a pair of free throws and, after a WSU 3-pointer, Westmoreland-Vendiola knocked down a pair of free throws to get within 64-52 with 9:29 to play.
Leading by 10 with 5:34 to go,
Sam Rensch sandwiched a Warrior jumper a steal and slam and a 3-pointer, Fried knocked down a pair of free throws and Hinker hit another 3-pointer to grow the lead to 79-61 with 2:57 to play. Ferguson scored the final five AU points and the Warriors scored five points of their own to bring the game to its final score.
The Vikings close the 2025 slate on Saturday afternoon, hosting Concordia-St. Paul at 1:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
