Women's Basketball Falls In Thursday Contest Against Winona State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team fell at the hands of Winona State 87-58 on Thursday night at the Elmen Center.

With the loss, the Vikings move to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC while the Warriors jump to 8-4, 5-1.

Miranda Lomax led the Vikings with a season-high 17 points and 4 rebounds. She was on fire beyond the arc, going 5 for 7 for her best performance as a Viking. Ava Pautz added 10 to the point column while Clarissa Sauer led the team in rebounds with five and Addie Hanna added four rebounds.

The Vikings started the scoring with two points from Maliyah Elliott but WSU quickly jumped ahead 13-2 at the media timeout. After a Lomax 3-pointer, the Warriors closed the quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 26-9 lead into the second. Elliott led the Vikings with four first quarter points.

The second quarter started with the Vikings again after a three from Lomax. After eight Warrior points, the Vikings went on a 5-0 run led by a three-pointer from Peyton Hardy and layup from Sanneh to chip back within 34-17 with 5:56 to go in the half.

The Warriors didn't let up on the pressure and ended the half on an 11-2 run, taking a 47-21 lead into the break. Lomax led the Vikings with six points at the half and Elliott added four. Sauer led the team in rebounds with three while Elliott led in the assists category with three.

The third quarter saw much of the same for the Vikings. The Warriors continued to pressure defensively and worked seamlessly on offense. The Vikings powered through in the final quarter with 6-0 run within the final minutes before a pair of WSU free throws brought the game to its final score. Pautz scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to cap off the Vikings 19-point quarter.
