SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team fell 80-72 against Hastings College on New Year's Eve at the Elmen Center. The Vikings fall to 4-9 with the loss while the Broncos played the game as an exhibition.
Isabella Sanneh had 20 points and 17 rebounds to go with five assists, all team-highs.
Payton Hardy added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals while
Miranda Lomax added nine points off the bench.
After an HC 3-pointer opened the scoring, Elliott knocked down a 3-pointer before an Edmonds layup and Hardy jumper put the Vikings in front 7-3 with 7:10 to go in the first quarter. After The Broncos cut their deficit to 10-9, Hardy knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, Lomax hit one of her own and Sanneh got a layup off an
Addie Hanna feed to cap an 11-0 run and give the Vikings a 21-9 lead with 3:09 left in the quarter. HC scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 21-13 deficit into the second quarter.
A 7-2 Bronco run opened the quarter and brought them back within three points before a triple from Edmonds and a layup from
Ava Pautz put the Vikings ahead 28-20 with 5:49 remaining in the half. Hastings marched back within a pair at 30-28 but the Vikings offset that with a 7-0 run, led by four Sanneh points and a Pautz 3-pointer, but the Broncos scored just before the buzzer to make it 37-30 AU at the break.
The Augustana lead grew to as many as eight in the early stages of the third quarter but in the final six minutes of action, the Broncos started their quest back. HC was able to stay within a pair of possessions for most of the final minutes, capping the quarter with a jumper to get within a point going into the final frame.
The Broncos grabbed a lead with 7:57 to play, knocking down a jumper to go ahead 60-59. The Vikings scored the next four points to go ahead three but a Bronco 3-pointer started an 8-2 run, giving them a 68-65 lead with 4:16 to go. After a Viking 3-pointer tied the score, HC countered with an 11-2 run to run away with the game. AU scored two of the final three points, bringing the game to its final score.
The Vikings will take on Wayne State at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday inside the Elmen Center.
