Women's Basketball Fends Off Wayne State For Home Victory

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team (5-9, 2-6 NSIC) was dominant in the middle quarters to help power them to a 74-68 victory over Wayne State (6-8, 1-7) on Saturday afternoon inside the Elmen Center.

Addie Hanna led the charge off the bench, scoring 21 points on 6 of 7 shooting, including 3 of 4 from deep, and 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Isabella Sanneh racked up another double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kristin Edmonds led the starters with 17 points and Clarissa Sauer added 10 points and five rebounds.

Through five minutes of action, WSC held a 4-2 lead on four made free throws to take the game into its first media timeout. Hanna came out firing from the break, knocking down a 3-pointer to give the Vikings their first lead of the game at the 4:48 mark of the first quarter at 5-4.

The Wildcats knocked down a 3-pointer and Sanneh scored in the paint to even the score at 7-7. In the final 3:20 of the first quarter, WSC outscored AU 14-6, giving them a 21-13 lead into the second quarter.

Edmonds came out of the break with a 3-pointer and, after a Wildcat bucket, Hardy knocked down a free throw and Mia Donald scored off an offensive rebound to get the Vikings back within four at 23-19. WSC broke up AU runs with a layup but a Sauer layup and Edmonds hit another 3-ball to cut the AU deficit to 25-24 with 4:52 left in the half.

The teams traded buckets for the next two minutes before a Hanna layup evened the score and Edmonds hit a pair of free throws to give AU a lead at 34-32 with 2:12 left in the half. The Vikings led with 53 seconds to go in the half but the Wildcats knocked down a pair of free throws to take a 38-37 lead at halftime.

WSC brought their lead to five points with 6:53 left in the third quarter, a lead that would be erased by an Edmonds 3-pointer and Sauer layup to even the score at 46-46 at the 6:11 mark.

That run ballooned to 9-0 after a Sauer putback and Sanneh layup put AU ahead 50-46. The Wildcats scored just two points in the final 6:53, a layup that was followed by a Sanneh layup and Maliyah Elliott 3-pointer to give AU a 55-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a Wildcat jumper opened the final frame, Sauer hit a pair of free throws to keep the lead at seven. The Viking lead floated between four and seven points for the entire fourth quarter as they countered each Wildcat basket with one of their own until a WSC 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining brought them within two points. In the end, Miranda Lomax and Payton Hardy each knocked down crucial free throws to push the game to its final score.

The Vikings return to action Friday, hosting Jamestown at 7:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
