WINONA, Minn. - The Augustana Vikings fell in a shootout to Winona State 90-83 on Wednesday night inside McCown Gymnasium.
Augustana falls to 10-13 overall and 7-10 from the NSIC while the Warriors 16-7, 11-6.
The Vikings shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the field and 50 percent (15-30) from deep, but the Warriors couldn't miss, going a scorching 54.8 percent (34-62) from the field and 43.8 percent (14-32) from beyond the arc.
Tanner Te Slaa shot 7 of 14 from the field and knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Vikings with 18 points.
Akoi Akoi added 18 points of his own and added three assists without a turnover.
Sam Rensch followed with 17 points and
Tameron Ferguson tallied 10 points and three steals.
Bennett Fried grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
WSU opened the night with an 11-4 run before an Akoi 3-pointer brought the Vikings within four. The Vikings countered a Warrior 3-pointer with four straight points to pull within 14-11 at the 15:39 mark of the first half.
After a Warrior free throw, Rensch knocked down a floater and then Fried knocked down a 3-pointer following a WSU three to trail by two. In the first nine minutes of gametime, Winona State led 23-19 while the two teams combined to shoot 15 of 28 from the field and 9 of 17 from deep.
Jack Hastreiter got a 3-pointer to fall at the 10:08 mark to pull the Vikings within one but a quick 6-0 WSU run jumped them ahead by seven. Over a five minute stretch, Akoi scored five points while
Kelton Coleman added four to lead an 11-6 run and bring AU right back within a possession at 35-33.
The teams traded points to keep the game within two with under two minutes to go before four straight WSU points jumped them ahead by six. A Te Slaa 3-pointer ended the run but the Warriors outscored the Vikings 5-2 in the final minute of play to bring the game to a 49-43 halftime score in favor of WSU.
A Te Slaa 3-pointer to open the second half brought the Vikings within three before a 5-0 WSU run put them back in front by eight at 54-46. The next 10 minutes saw the Warrior lead balance between four and eight until a 3-pointer made their lead 72-61 with 7:48 to play.
Ferguson and Rensch scored the next five points to get within six but, again, the Warriors halted the run with a 3-pointer to go back ahead by nine. Ferguson, Akoi and Rensch didn't waver, scoring seven of the next nine points to make it a 77-73 WSU lead in the final 4:22. That would be as close as the Vikings would come as the Warriors scored 13 of the final 23 points to close the game.
Augustana returns home on Saturday, hosting Minnesota Duluth at 3:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
