SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana Vikings wrapped up a four-game sweep over Bemidji State in NSIC action on Monday afternoon at Ronken Field. The Vikings moved to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC while the Beavers fall to 1-9, 0-4.
Game One: Augustana 11, Bemidji State 0
After a scoreless first inning, the AU offense jumped for three runs in the second.
Troy Berg led off with a single before
Ryan Clementi followed with one of his own. They moved to scoring position on a wild pitch and then advanced another base on a wild pitch while
Joshua Koskie walked to score the first run.
Koskie stole second to put a pair into scoring position. With no outs,
Maddox Foss grounded out to bring in Clementi and
Kobe Eikmeier lifted a sac fly to clear the bases, bringing in Koskie to put the Vikings in front 3-0.
Neither team scored until the fourth inning when Foss doubled down the right field line and Eikmeier singled, with an errant throw getting Foss home and putting the Vikings in front 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, Berg and Clementi singled to lead off the inning and both moved a base on a wild pitch. Koskie drove in Berg with a sac fly before a Eikmeier single with two outs drove in Clementi and made it 6-0 in favor of AU.
The Vikings posted a five spot in the top of the seventh inning to round out the scoring.
Jason Axelberg singled with one out and Clementi doubled with two outs to get a pair in scoring position.
Koskie was plunked to load the bases and
Nate Soelter wore one to bring in a run. Eikmeier drove in a pair with an 0-2 single to right and after Wintertein was hit to reload the bases,
Jack Hines drove in two more with a single to bring the game to its final score.
Hines finished the day 3 for 5 with two RBI while Clementi went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and Eikmeier went 3 for 3 with four RBI.
Mariano Gomez was sharp for the Vikings, striking out nine and allowing four hits in a complete-game effort.
Game Two: Augustana 14, Bemidji State 4
Winterstein welcomed the Beavers into the final game of the series with a solo shot to right field on the second pitch of the game to give AU an early lead. With two outs in the first, Clementi added another run with an RBI single up the middle to score Siegel and make it 2-0.
Cal Schmelzle led the second inning off with his first career hit and advanced to second on a one out walk from Winterstein. They each stole a base with two outs and Schmelzle scored his first career run on a wild pitch to add a run.
Berg walked with one out in the third and stole second with two outs to add another threat. After a walk, Schmelzle drove in his first career RBI with a single through the left side, scoring Berg and putting the Vikings in front 4-0.
Each team scored a run in the fifth inning, with
Jake Lundquist lifting a sac fly and the Beavers hitting a solo home run to make it 5-1.
In the seventh,
Joe Kolbeck doubled into the right center gap and Winterstein followed it up three pitches later with a two-run blast to grow the lead to 9-1. BSU countered in the bottom of the inning with two runs and scored another in the eighth to trail 9-4 into the ninth inning.
Kolbeck reached on a one out single in the ninth and Winterstein followed with a single. Hines would get hit by a pitch before a Siegel walk brought in a run and put the Vikings at double digits.
Jason Axelberg cleared it all up on the very next pitch, sending a grand slam to left to close the scoring.
Winterstein finished with three hits while Clementi, Schmelzle and Kolbeck each had a pair. Siegel had a hit and drew four walks while Axelberg had four RBI and the grand slam.
Kai Taylor earned the win in his first start of the season, allowing four hits and striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.
Joel Van De Stroet closed out the sixth while
Aidan Torpey,
Bjorn Lind and
Matt Brown each had an inning and two strikeouts to finish the game.
Augustana will return to the field Tuesday in Topeka, Kansas for a two-game series against Washburn.
