Viking Baseball Sweeps Minot State In Final Doubleheader Of Regular Season

MINOT, N.D. - The Augustana baseball team handled Minot State in the Magic City, winning 12-4 and 15-4 in the final regular season doubleheader of 2025 at Corbett Field.

The Vikings, locked into the No. 2 seed for the NSIC Tournament, move to 35-14 overall and 29-10 in the NSIC. The Beavers fall to 17-31, 11-28.

Game 1: Augustana 12, Minot State 4
Carter Heinsch went 3 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored while Jack Hines had three hits, a HBP and five RBI to help power the offense to a game one victory. Kobe Eikmeir added two hits and two runs scored while Ryan Clementi reached three times and scored a pair of runs.

In their final tune ups before postseason action, Ashton Michek and J.D. Hennen (6-1) threw three innings apiece, with Michek allowing an earned run and collecting four strikeouts and Hennen adding five strikeouts without allowing a run. Tom Sun gave up a run and recorded an out while Cal Schmelzle rolled up a double play against the only batter he would face.

The offense rolled early as Trevor Winterstein led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Heinsch single to lead off the first. Heinsch went on to steal second base before scoring on a Hines single to give AU a 2-0 lead.

A three-run bottom of the first jolted the Beavers in front. In the fourth, Clementi was plunked to lead off the frame and stole second before a Siegel walk put a pair on. Eikmeier loaded the bases with a bunt single and Heinsch drove in a pair with a double down the right field line. Hines finished the inning with a three-run blast to put AU in front 7-3.

Joshua Koskie opened the fifth with a solo blast to tack onto the Viking lead. Clementi was hit by a pitch and scored on a double from Siegel to add another. With one out, Heinsch had his second RBI double of the game to score Siegel and then would come around to score on a failed pickoff to make it 11-3 AU.

Each team scored in the seventh inning to bring the game to its final score. Eikmeier led the inning off with a double and scored on a two-out single from Hines while the Beavers collected an RBI groundout.

Game 2: Augustana 15, Minot State 4
Winterstein, Hines and Clementi all had two-hit games in the nightcap. Axelberg launched a pinch hit grand slam to give him a team-leading four RBI while Heinsch drove in three and Winterstein added a pair of RBI.

Joel Van De Stroet recorded an out and allowed two runs, one earned, as the starter. Jack Sutton threw a scoreless inning and allowed two hits. Aidan Torpey earned his fourth win of the season, going 3 2/3 of shutout baseball before Kai Taylor earned a three-inning save to cap off the victory.

The Beavers opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning. In the second, The Vikings scraped together three runs on two hits and two errors, capped by an RBI double from Winterstein to take a 3-2 lead.

Eikmeier reached on an error to open the fourth inning and stole second to reach scoring position. A Lundquist bunt single pushed Eikmeier to third but a fielder's choice cut off Eikmeier trying to score. One batter later, Winterstein was able to score Lundquist on a groundout to double the Viking lead at 4-2.

In the fifth, Koskie singled, Pinnow was hit by a pitch, Lind reached on a fielder's choice and Eikmeier was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Axelberg entered the game as a pinch hitter and launched a grand slam to make it 8-2 Augustana.

The Vikings went on to add a run in the sixth on a wild pitch while MiSU scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4. Clementi drove in a run on a bunt single in the seventh before a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Heinsch made it 13-4.

The Vikings put the game on run-rule alert with a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Joe Kolbeck in the top of the eighth. After a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, Taylor got a pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice to end the game.

The two teams will conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
