SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Easton Young scored his second goal of the night 2:54 into overtime as Augustana men's hockey edged Ferris State, 4-3, Saturday evening at Midco Arena.
The Vikings built a three-goal cushion in the opening period before the Bulldogs answered with three unanswered goals to force overtime. Augustana regrouped in the extra session, controlling possession before Young buried the game-winner to secure the victory.
Augustana opened the scoring just 3:16 into the contest when Young finished a quick-strike opportunity at even strength, with
Owen Bohn and
Joey DelGreco earning assists. The Vikings continued to press and doubled the lead at 14:28 as
Leonid Bulgakov netted his 11th goal of the season, set up by
Cole Burtch and
Owen Baumgartner. The home side made it 3-0 late in the first period when
Brett Meerman scored at 18:44, again with Baumgartner contributing on the assist, along with
Hunter Bischoff. Ferris State responded just seconds later on the power play, trimming the deficit to 3-1 heading into the intermission.
The Bulldogs carried momentum into the second period, scoring twice to even the game. Josh Zary struck at 2:03 before Gavin Best tied the contest at 11:12, knotting the score at 3-3. Augustana generated chances throughout the remainder of regulation, including multiple power plays, but was unable to find the go-ahead goal as the teams skated into overtime.
In the extra frame, the Vikings wasted little time. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone, Young ended the contest with his second tally of the night, finishing a feed from
Colton Friesen, with goaltender
Josh Kotai also picking up an assist on the play.
Kotai earned the win in net for Augustana, stopping 21 shots, while the Vikings outshot Ferris State, 32-24, on the night.
