SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana built a three-goal cushion through two periods and held off a third-period push from Colorado College to secure a 4-2 victory Saturday night at Midco Arena. The Vikings opened the second half of the season with a weekend sweep, improving to 12-6-3 overall.
Augustana opened the scoring late in the first period as
Hayden Hennen fired a shot from the point through traffic at 18:47 to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge after 20 minutes.
The Vikings added to the lead early in the second period with a shorthanded goal.
Hunter Bischoff broke free on a breakaway just 34 seconds into the frame, slipping the puck past the Colorado College goaltender to make it 2-0. Augustana continued to control play midway through the period, extending the lead at 9:45 when
Will Howard scored on a breakaway to push the advantage to 3-0. Colorado College answered later in the period, cutting the deficit to 3-1 at the 15:58 mark.
The Tigers made it a one-goal game early in the third period, scoring at 2:41 to trim the Augustana lead to 3-2. The Vikings tightened defensively down the stretch and sealed the win late as Hennen scored his second goal of the night into an empty net at 19:14.
Christian Manz earned the win in goal for Augustana, stopping 31 shots, to improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Vikings finished the night 1-for-2 on the power play and added a key shorthanded tally.
