Maliyah Elliott hit a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to help the Augustana women's basketball team sink Minnesota Duluth 57-56 on Saturday afternoon in the Elmen Center.
The Vikings (9-13, 6-10 NSIC) held the Bulldogs (15-5, 13-3 NSIC) scoreless over the final 5:43 of gametime before the Elliott jumper iced the game. AU shot 11 of 13 from the line while UMD only hit just one free throw on two attempts. The Vikings led just three times, once at 4-2, one at 6-4 and one at the final horn.
Isabella Sanneh scored 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting while knocking down 9 of 10 from the free throw line. She added seven rebounds and four assists.
Miranda Lomax had 12 points and Elliott finished with eight points, three rebounds and three assists.Â
After UMD opened the scoring, the Vikings knocked down a pair of free throws from
Isabella Sanneh to even the score. Much of the first quarter saw back-and-forth baskets between the Vikings and Bulldogs.Â
UMD took its largest lead of the quarter after a 3-pointer made it 12-8 with 5:24 to go in the quarter. The Vikings closed in on the lead, led by seven points from Lomax. The quarter ended with the Vikings trailing 18-17 to the Bulldogs.
The second quarter started with a 5-0 UMD run, ended by a free throw from Sanneh. Prior to a timeout by the Vikings, the Bulldogs pulled ahead to lead 25-18 at the 7:32 mark. Out of the timeout, Sanneh drew a foul and put away both free throws cutting UMD's lead to five. The Bulldogs then went on for a 9-2 to grow their lead to 34-24 with 4:06 to go.Â
The Vikings kept pushing with scores from Sanneh and Pautz to keep the Bulldogs lead in single digits.
Kristin Edmonds drew herself a foul to secure her first two points of the game with under one minute of play to go. The first half ended with the Bulldogs leading 40-32 after a 15-point half for Sanneh.Â
Ava Pautz started the second half for the Vikings with a layup soon followed by a basket from Sanneh to cut the deficit in half. The Bulldogs responded with their first basket of the quarter.Â
Pautz forced a jump ball and Sanneh turned it into two points for the Vikings to bring them within four. Despite the hot start to the half from the Vikings, the Bulldogs didn't ease up bringing the lead back to double digits at 52-42 with 1:58 left in the third quarter.Â
Sanneh hit a pair of free throws to bring the deficit to single digits and Elliott scored twice before the buzzer to cut the deficit to 52-48 into the fourth quarter.
Lomax knocked down a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to bring them within 52-51. The fourth quarter dragged from there as each team scored just four points to make it 56-55 in favor of the Bulldogs with 5:26 to go. That held until the end, with the Vikings forcing a miss with five seconds left before Elliott's game winner iced the game.Â
The Vikings return to the road on Friday night, going to the Twin Cities to take on Concordia-St. Paul.Â
