ST. PAUL, MINN. - The Augustana women's basketball team fell to Concordia-St. Paul 80-56 on Thursday night inside the Gangelhoff Center.
Miranda Lomax paced the Vikings (9-14, 6-11 NSIC) with 16 points, followed by
Isabella Sanneh with 14. Sanneh also added seven rebounds along with a team high eight rebounds from
Ava Pautz. Pautz put up eight points followed by
Maliyah Elliott with seven points and five rebounds.
Clarrisa Sauer opened the game with a layup, followed by a layup from Sanneh as the Vikings jumped out to an early lead. The Vikings held the lead for the first 6:20 of play before Golden Bears (16-6, 12-5 NSIC) went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-9 lead with 2:47 left in the first quarter.
Lomax stopped the run with a layup, but the Golden Bear quickly answered with one of their own. Sanneh closed the quarter with a jumper, though Concordia-St. Paul held a 22-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter started with a Concordia-St. Paul 3-pointer before
Greta Dillinger converted two free throws to add points for the Vikings. The Golden Bears responded with a 7-0 run before the Vikings found a groove in play, closing on a 16-4 run over the last 6:57 of the second quarter. Lomax and Pautz led the surge both scoring five points. Despite the momentum, the Vikings headed to the locker room trailing the Golden Bears 36-33.
The Vikings struggled to find their rhythm back in the third quarter. Sauer once again opened the scoring with a free throw answered by Concordia-St. Paul with a 3-pointer. After several traded baskets, the Golden Bears pulled away on a 9-0 run before a basket from Sanneh ended it. Concordia-St. Paul continued to build their lead, outscoring the Vikings 12-2 in the last 3:53 of the third quarter.Â
Dillinger hit a 3-pointer to start the final 10 minutes of play which was answered by a 3-pointer from Concordia-St. Paul. After Pautz converted a free throw, the Golden Bears found themselves another run going 8-4 to bring Concordia-St. Paul's lead to 74-51 prior to a media timeout.Â
The Golden Bears found themselves a free throw out of the timeout before both teams went scoreless for 1:39 of play, ended by a layup from Sanneh. Lomax continued the scoring grabbing a layup and a free throw. Concordia-St. Paul ended the game on a 5-0 run to secure a win over the Vikings 80-56.
The Vikings return to action Saturday afternoon, taking on Winona State for a 1 p.m., tipoff.
