ST. CLOUD, Minn - The No. 11 Augustana wrestling team dropped a close battle to No. 13 St. Cloud State, 21-14, on Saturday afternoon at Hallenbeck Hall.
After starting at 285 pounds, the Vikings dropped the first three weights before
Luke Koenen got the Vikings on the board. He recorded a pair of takedowns and an escape following a scoreless first period to take a 7-1 lead. In the third, Koenen held off a comeback that saw his lead cut to 8-5, finishing with a decision to bring the Vikings within 12-3.
Nolan Ambrose continued the run at 149, earning a takedown in the first before scoring a reversal and 10 nearfall points in a dominant second period, closing out a tech fall and to make it 12-8 SCSU.
The dual seemed to be decided at 157 and 165 as the Huskies earned a 4-2 decision and 4-1 sudden victory to add to their lead.
Coy Gunderson picked up a ranked victory at 174 to get the Vikings back on track. After each wrestler tallied an escape, Gunderson recorded a takedown in sudden victory to bring their deficit to 18-11.
The Huskies clinched a win at 184 pounds as
Charlie Petit grinded but couldn't come out on top of a 1-0 decision against the No. 2-ranked 184 pounder.
Max Ramberg closed the dual at 197 with a second period escape and third period takedown to bring the match to its final score.
The Vikings return to the Elmen Center on Friday, hosting Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m.
