Men's Basketball Drops Friday Night Affair Against Jamestown

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana men's basketball team (8-6, 6-3 NSIC) fell to Jamestown (8-7, 6-3) 87-77 on Friday night at the Elmen Center.

Brady Helgren led all Vikings with a team-high 21 points, finishing an efficient 8-of-11 from the field while adding seven rebounds. Sam Rensch followed with 16 points and three steals. Bennett Fried scored 14 points on 5 of 5 shooting and pulled down three rebounds while Tameron Ferguson added 12 points, five assists and three steals.

Augustana opened the game with strong energy on both ends, taking a brief early lead behind baskets from Helgren and Rensch. Jamestown responded quickly, finding success in the paint and stringing together a scoring run to gain momentum.

The Vikings stayed composed, answering Jamestown's runs with timely finishes inside and aggressive offensive rebounding. Midway through the first half, Augustana tied the game at 10-10 following a fast-break alley-oop from Ferguson to Fried, bringing life into the Elmen Center.

Jamestown regained the lead late in the first half with efficient perimeter shooting, but Augustana continued to answer. Fried scored 12 of his 14 points before the break, while Helgren and Rensch added key buckets to keep the Vikings within striking distance. Jamestown carried a narrow 38-34 advantage into halftime after knocking down a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in the half.

The second half opened with Jamestown establishing control, using ball movement and three-point shooting to push the lead to double digits. Augustana continued to score effectively in the paint, trimming the deficit to five on multiple occasions behind strong interior play from Helgren and Rensch.

A 7-0 Augustana run midway through the second half brought the Vikings within five, highlighted by a steal and finish from Rensch and a transition bucket from Ferguson. However, Jamestown responded with back-to-back three-pointers to halt the momentum and rebuild its cushion.

Down the stretch, Augustana continued to battle on the glass and attack the rim, finishing with 52 points in the paint and a 16-4 edge in second-chance points. Despite the effort, Jamestown's shooting efficiency and depth proved decisive, as the Jimmies knocked down key shots in the final minutes to secure the 87-77 victory.

The Vikings close their homestand on Saturday afternoon, hosting Northern State at 3:30 p.m., inside the Elmen Center.
