Women's Basketball Competes, Falls To No. 1 Minnesota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team fell to No. 1 Minnesota State 86-57 after a Thursday night dual in the Elmen Center.

Kristin Edmonds led the scoring for the Vikings taking 13 on the night. Ava Pautz added 12 points along with seven rebounds. Isabella Sanneh grabbed herself a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for Augustana. Miranda Lomax found four steals to lead the Vikings on defense.  

The Vikings (9-16, 6-13 NSIC) opened up the game strong with a steal and score from Sanneh, followed by a 3-pointer from Edmonds. The Vikings held the lead for 2:38 of play until the Mavericks found a 6-0 run to take the lead. Minnesota State continued their run, leaving the Vikings scoreless for 5:42 of play. 

Lomax ended the drought with a deep 3-pointer to bring the Vikings within three of the Mavericks (25-0, 19-0 NSIC). Edmonds added two free throws after a bucket from the Mavericks. Edmonds then found herself her second 3-pointer of the game. The Vikings trailed 16-13 after the first quarter. 

Sanneh started off the scoring once again with a layup to bring the score to 16-15, Minnesota State. Following the start from the Vikings, the Mavericks grabbed an 8-0 run before a layup from Addie Hanna ended it. Minnesota State didn't ease up finding a 5-0 run prior to a timeout from Augustana. 

Out of the timeout, Pautz converted an and-one, before the Mavericks grabbed a basket and another and-one from Pautz. Several baskets were traded before the halftime buzzer rang, sending the Vikings into the locker room trailing 39-32.

The second half started with the Mavericks but was followed by baskets from Sanneh and Clarrisa Sauer. Minnesota State rallied for a 6-0 run before Edmonds converted two free throws for the Vikings. Both teams went basket for basket for much of the third quarter with the Mavericks outscoring the Vikings 19-17.

The fourth quarter saw a 15-0 run for Minnesota State before a 3-pointer from Greta Dillinger ended it. After a bucket from the Mavericks, Pautz secured her 12th point of the night. Minnesota State kept the momentum for the final 4:51 of the game ending on a 11-3 run over the Vikings. The Mavericks defeated the Vikings 86-57 after a hard fought battle.

The Vikings will return to the Elmen Center for a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday against the St. Cloud State Huskies.
