SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana men's basketball team saw its six-game road winning streak snapped on Thursday night, falling 86-67 to Southwest Minnesota State at the R/A Facility.
Tameron Ferguson led the Vikings with 18 points and six assists to go with three rebounds and two steals.
Bennett Fried added 11 points on 4 of 4 shooting while
Caden Hinker had 10 points.Â
Hinker scored the first eight Viking points to keep them within 10-8 at the 13:39 mark of the first half. After an SMSU jumper, Rensch got a jumper to go and
Tanner Te Slaa hit a 3-pointer for the first Viking lead of the night at 13-12.Â
After a Mustang 3-pointer, Fried got a layup to even the score. SMSU countered with back-to-back 3-pointers but
Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola and
Jack Hastreiter each got twos to bring AU back to 21-19 with 8:20 to play in the first half.Â
After misses from each team, they combined to score on four consecutive possessions with six Viking points and five Mustang points to bring AU within 26-25. The teams alternated the next six 2-pointers to keep the game within a point before Ferguson broke the streak and got a layup for a late lead. The Mustangs countered with a 3-pointer, giving them a 35-33 halftime advantage.Â
Ferguson opened the second half with two layups on each side of a Mustang layup to even the score at 37-37. SMSU answered with a 10-2 run and, after the Vikings got back within six, added an 8-2 run to grow a 57-45 lead with 11:10 to play.Â
The lead grew to 13 before two Te Slaa free throws and a 3-pointer from
Markus Talley brought AU back within eight. SMSU followed with four points of their own and, after two Rensch free throws, went on an 8-0 to go ahead 77-59 with 3:43 remaining.
The Vikings outscored the Mustangs 9-8 the rest of the way, bringing the game to its final score.
Augustana concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon hosting Sioux Falls at 3:30 p.m., in the Elmen Center. Â
