ST. PAUL, Minn. – Jacob Jastrzebski scored with 43 seconds remaining in regulation and Augustana secured the extra conference point in a shootout following a 3-3 overtime tie against St. Thomas Friday night at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
Easton Young and
Colton Friesen also scored in regulation, while
Josh Kotai turned aside 39 shots through overtime before stopping both St. Thomas shooters in the shootout to lift the Vikings.
Augustana struck first at 9:18 of the opening period on the power play. Young netted his sixth of the season off assists from
Nace Langus and Jastrzebski to give the Vikings a 1-0 advantage. Kotai was sharp early, stopping all 16 shots he faced in the first period to send Augustana into the intermission with the lead.
St. Thomas responded in the second period, scoring at 10:05 to even the game before taking a 2-1 lead at 13:59. The Vikings weathered sustained pressure and entered the third period down one.
The Tommies extended the margin to 3-1 at 6:07 of the third period on a power-play goal, but Augustana answered late. Friesen cut the deficit to 3-2 at 14:55, finishing feeds from
Owen Bohn and
Joey DelGreco. With Kotai pulled for the extra attacker, Jastrzebski buried his eighth of the season at 19:16, assisted by
Cole Burtch and
Hayden Hennen, tying the game at 3-3 and forcing overtime.
Neither team found the winner in the five-minute overtime session. In the shootout,
Tyler Hennen and
Brett Meerman each scored for Augustana, while Kotai denied both St. Thomas attempts to secure the extra league point.
Kotai finished the night with 39 saves on 42 shots through overtime as St. Thomas held a 42-27 edge in shots on goal.
