Baseball Drops Two At #9 Colorado Mesa

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 11 Augustana Baseball team dropped a pair of road games to No. 9 Colorado Mesa on Friday at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.

Game 1: Colorado Mesa 18, Augustana 6
Maddox Foss had two hits and scored two runs while Joshua Koskie had two hits, two runs and an RBI off the bench to lead the offense in game one. Ethan Hoffman allowed seven runs in three innings while striking out three to open the game, moving to 2-1 on the season.

Kobe Eikmeier and Brandon Weigel opened the day with walks before Eikmeier advanced to third when Weigel got caught stealing. He opened the scoring two plays later when Heinsch delivered a sac fly to make it 1-0.

The Mavericks countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-1. Eikmeier added a run with an RBI double in the third before a five-run fourth inning put CMU in front 10-2. The Mavericks added another run in the fifth before Cal Schmelzle brought in Carter Heinsch on a groundout to make it 11-3.

A five-run sixth inning leaped the CMU lead to 16-3. Troy Berg delivered a two-run double in the seventh but Maverick runs in the eighth and a Koskie home run in the ninth brought the game to its final score.

Game 2: Colorado Mesa 6, Augustana 5
Weigel and Heinsch had two hits apiece at the top of the order while Bjorn Lind added two more hits in the nine-hole. Schmelzle and Berg each had a pair of RBI as well. Will Simmons allowed four runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Jack Sutton added a scoreless inning before Will Henry allowed two runs in two innings, earning his first loss of the season.

Weigel opened game two with a hit by pitch and Heinsch doubled to get Weigel to third. Schmelzle delivered a sac fly on the next pitch to bring in Weigel and give the Vikings a 1-0 first inning lead for the third consecutive game.

A Maverick run in the bottom of the second inning evened the scoring but the Vikings quickly answered. Weigel singled before moving to third on a Heinsch double. Schmelzle hit another sac fly to score Weigel to put the Vikings back in front. With two outs, Berg drove a home run to enter, scoring Heinsch and giving the Vikings a 4-1 lead.

Weigel got a sac bunt to score Pinnow in the fourth inning before a three-run bottom of the inning brought CMU within 5-4. They went on to score two more runs in the fifth to bring the game to its final score.

The two teams will conclude the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. central time
