HOUGHTON, Mich. – Carter Theissen scored his first career goal, and
Brett Meerman added two tallies, but No. 16 Augustana men's hockey fell to Michigan Tech, 4-3, on Saturday night at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena as the Huskies completed the weekend sweep.
Augustana built leads in both the first and second periods, but Michigan Tech answered each time before netting the game-winning goal midway through the third period.
Josh Kotai finished with 31 saves in the contest as the Vikings earned one of six points on the weekend.
The Vikings struck first at 7:55 of the opening period as Meerman finished an even-strength opportunity, set up by
Easton Young. Michigan Tech responded at 11:21 to even the score, but Augustana answered on the power play. Meerman scored his second of the period at 12:29, converting a feed from
Colton Friesen and
Hayden Hennen to give the Vikings a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission.
Michigan Tech tied the game early in the second period at 9:33, but Augustana responded less than a minute later. Theissen found the back of the net at 10:29, finishing a setup from
Cole Burtch and
Leonid Bulgakov to restore the Viking lead. The Huskies answered again later in the frame, knotting the contest at 3-3 heading into the second break.
The deadlock held into the third period before Michigan Tech scored the eventual game-winner at 10:33. Augustana pressed late, skating with an extra attacker, but was unable to find the equalizer.
