SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 11 Augustana wrestling team won five of the final six bouts to stun No. 6 Wisconsin-Parkside 19-17 on Saturday afternoon in the Elmen Center.
Six seniors saw their final dual as competitors in the Elmen Center as
Kyle Boeke,
Cael Larson,
Sam McEnelly,
Christian Olsen,
Max Ramberg and
Kade Sammons were honored prior to the match.
After dropping a pair of major decisions to open the match,
Luke Koenen got the ball rolling. He picked up two first-period takedowns to open in front and added a takedown and escape in the third period to hold onto a 10-6 decision.
149 started a run of five consecutive weight classes that saw a ranked wrestler fall. At 157, it was
Cael Larson who came out on top to earn a win over No. 4. All it took was a first period takedown as Larson allowed just two escapes to take a 3-2 decision, bringing the Vikings within 13-6.
After the intermission,
Payton Handevidt earned a ranked win of his own at 165. Leading 1-0 into the third period, Handevidt earned a key takedown to close a 4-2 victory and chip back into the Ranger lead.
The Rangers earned a major decision at 174 to take a 17-9 lead and put them one win away from closing a win. The comeback started with
Charlie Petit, who captured takedowns in the first and third period and had an escape to win a 7-2 decision and make it 17-12.
In his final Elmen Center bout,
Max Ramberg racked up a major decision to bring the Vikings within a point. Ramberg pisces up a takedown in each period while earning an escape and riding point to win 11-2 and set up a winner-take-all bout at heavyweight.
Jaret Peterson won the night for the Vikings. After a scoreless first, Peterson decided to start the second period neutral and was rewarded, collecting a takedown to put him in front. He allowed just two escapes from there, also adding a riding point to finish the comeback and give the Vikings another NSIC victory.
The Vikings round out their regular season next weekend, starting with a dual at Minot State at 7 p.m. Friday night.
