Vikings Fall In Nationally-Ranked Neutral Site Game

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 21 Augustana baseball team (12-5) closed a five-game stretch away from home on Tuesday morning, falling 8-6 to #9 Grand Valley State (15-1) at Mark Worley Field.

Ragan Pinnow had two of the Vikings' six hits, driving in a pair of runs while Carter Heinsch had a hit and walked twice while scoring two runs. Carter McPeak hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat while Nate Soelter and Bjorn Lind each added a hit.

Will Simmons allowed four runs, just one earned, in an inning of work. Riley Rothschadl gave up two runs and got five outs while Maddox Foss also allowed two runs in an inning of work. Joel Van De Stroet, Logan Von Berge and Jadon Bast combined to shut out the Lakers over the final 4 1/3 innings.

The Vikings got on the board in the first. Brandon Weigel was hit to open the game and moved to second on a Cal Schmelzle groundout. Heinsch delivered with an RBI single, scoring Weigel to make it 1-0. The Lakers countered with a two-out home run and bases-clearing triple to take a 4-1 lead.

Lind opened the second inning with a single, reached second on a balk and then got to third on a wild pitch. He would come in to score on a Jake Lundquist groundout to make it 4-2. After GVSU added two runs in the second, AU countered with a Pinnow RBI single to score Heinsch and make it 6-3.

The Lakers scored two more runs in the fourth to make their lead five. AU mounted a comeback in the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough. Heinsch scored on a Pinnow RBI single before McPeak hit a two-run blast to bring the game to its final score.

The Vikings will return to the field this weekend, hosting Jamestown for a three-game set.
