BOX SCORE 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana baseball team (14-5, 8-0 NSIC) returned to conference play on Thursday afternoon, sweeping Jamestown (5-15, 1-7) in a doubleheader at Ronken Field.
Game one: Augustana 9, Jamestown 2
Mariano Gomez (3-0) dominated to help power the Vikings to a series-opening win. The lefty struck out nine while allowing a run on six hits in six innings of work to earn the victory.
Myles Hanson threw the final frame, allowing an unearned run while picking up a pair of strikeouts to finish the win.
All nine Vikings to come to the plate had either a hit or an RBI in a complete performance.
Ragan Pinnow reached four times, recording three hits and scoring a pair of runs while driving in a run.
Carter Heinsch and
Nate Soelter had two hits and two RBI each while
Troy Berg,
Carter McPeak and
Kobe Eikmeier added a pair of hits apiece.
Berg singled with an out before stealing second to get into scoring position. After a balk moved him to third,
Carter Heinsch rolled a single past the second baseman to bring in Berg and open the scoring.
In the third, Eikmeier led off with a walk before getting all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He would score on a
Brandon Weigel groundout to double the AU scoring. With two outs,
Cal Schmelzle singled and stole second before another RBI single from Heinsch made it 3-0 Vikings.
Pinnow and McPeak singled to open the fourth before moving into scoring position with a balk.
Jake Lundquist drilled one to left for a sac fly, giving UJ its first out as Pinnow crossed home. After a failed pickoff attempt moved McPeak to third, Soelter doubled down the left field line to make it 5-0.
Pinnow drew a one-out walk in the fifth before getting to third on a McPeak single. He would score while McPeak got to second on a wild pitch and Soelter drove him in with a single up the middle with two outs to put AU ahead by seven. Soelter would end up stealing second and scoring on a
Kobe Eikmeier hit to make it 8-0. After a UJ run in the sixth, Pinnow picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to its final score.
Game two: Augustana 21, Jamestown 4, 7 innings
All 14 Vikings that stepped to the plate reached base in the run-rule shortened game. Berg had three hits while Heinsch went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.
Brandon Weigel drove in a pair and scored three times while adding a pair of hits, including a triple and
Nate Soelter drove in a pair and scored twice while getting two hits.
Ethan Hoffman was solid on the mound, striking out eight in five innings of work while allowing four hits and an earned run, moving to 3-1 on the season.
Kason Syverson made his collegiate debut in the sixth, allowing two hits and
Weigel reached on a one-out triple to the left center gap and would end up scoring on a Pinnow sac fly to make it 1-0.
The Jimmies shot themselves in the foot in the second, allowing the Vikings to add to their lead. With two outs, Soelter and Foss walked while Eikmeier was hit on the first pitch of his at bat to load the bases.
Weigel delivered from there, slotting a single through the left side to score a pair before a two-run double from Berg made it 5-0 AU. In the third, Heinsch was able to come around on a wild pitch to add a run.
The Jimmies hit a home run in the top of the fourth inning before the Vikings countered in the bottom of the inning. Weigel walked with one out before hits from Berg and Pinnow scored him to get the run back.
After a double steal got the two in scoring position, Heinsch delivered the damage with a two-run double to make it 9-1. Heinsch scored on a snow ball fight to reset the bases. The bases quickly loaded when Koskie walked, Soelter singled and Foss was hit before a McPeak pinch-hit double and Berg infield single brought all three home and gave the Vikings a 14-1 lead.
Following a three-spot in the sixth for the Jimmies,
Jacob Ornelles tallied an RBI single to make it 15-4 Vikings in the bottom of the sixth.
Ryan Clementi added an RBI single, Soelter had a two-run triple and
Maddox Foss had an RBI knock. Goeser closed the scoring with an RBI double.
The teams will finish the series Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., at Ronken Field.
