Baseball Wraps Up Ranked Sweep At Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 25 Augustana baseball team finished a four-game sweep of No. 18 Drury, winning 4-3 in game one before a 10 inning, 16-13 victory in the closing game.

Game one: Augustana 4, Drury 3
Brandon Weigel broke a stalemate in the top of the sixth inning to secure a series victory in game one.

Weigel had one of four Viking hits while walking twice. The Vikings had a total of eight free passes in the game as Troy Berg and Cal Schmelzle each had a sac fly and Carter Heinsch hit a home run to lead the offense.

Ashton Michek was dealt a no decision after allowing three runs and striking out five in three innings of work. Ryan Clementi took control from there, striking out a pair and facing just one over the minimum in the final four innings of work to earn the win.

Berg tripled with one out in the first inning before scoring on the Schmelzle sac fly to open the scoring. Three pitches later, Heinsch hit his solo blast for an early 2-0 lead. The Panthers cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the inning.

Kobe Eikmeier reached on a one-out walk in the second inning before stealing second to provide another threat. After a Brandon Weigel walk, they both got into scoring position on a passed ball. Troy Berg collected a sac fly in the next plate appearance to score Eikmeier and make it 3-1.

Drury scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run single to even the scoring. That held until the sixth when Bjorn Lind drew a one-out walk, moved to second on an Eikmeier single and scored on the Weigel knock. Clementi shut it down, facing just seven hitters in the final two innings to earn the win.

Game two: Augustana 16, Drury 12, 10 innings
Eikmeier went 4 for 6 while driving in a pair and scoring four runs to lead an offense that collected 15 hits. Lind added three hits and five RBI while Berg drove in three runs while tallying two hits. Ragan Pinnow and Jake Lundquist each had a pair of hits and scored twice each.

Drew Ball allowed three runs in 3 1/3 after earning the start. Maddox Foss added 1 2/3 scoreless with each striking out a pair. Bryson Bohannon allowed five runs while recording an out and Adam Diedrich got two outs and allowed a run. After Myles Hanson got two outs and gave up three runs, Jack Sutton provided 2 1/3 innings of stability to earn a victory and Jadon Bast earned his first career save in the final frame.

Lundquist opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the fourth inning before a three-run bottom of the inning saw DU take a 3-2 advantage. After an Eikmeier single and Weigel sac bunt to open the fifth inning, Berg drilled a double to center, scoring Eikmeier to even the score at 3-3.

The Panthers added six runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead 9-3. It wouldn't hold for long. Cole Goeser singled to open the seventh inning and Eikmeier doubled to get a pair in scoring position. A balk brought one across and Berg cleared the bases with a sac fly to bring in Eikmeier and make it 9-5.

With a fresh slate and one out, Cal Schmelzle got hit and Heinsch walked to put two on. Ragan Pinnow doubled to score one and came in with Heinsch on a Lind single to bring the Vikings within a run at 9-8.

Lundquist added a single to move Lind to second before bringing up Koskie, who entered the game as a runner for Goeser earlier in the inning. He would double in his first at bat of the game to score Lind and even the score.

Lundquist came across on a passed ball and Eikmeier capped it off with a two-run blast to put the Vikings in front 12-9. DU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game with a score that held into extra innings.

In the extra frame, Eikmeier got a single and a stolen base to lead off before beating out a tag at third to allow Weigel to reach and put runners on the corners. Berg drove Eikmeier in with a single to open the scoring in the inning. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded, Lind broke through with a bases-clearing double to make it 16-12. Drury added an RBI groundout to bring the game to its final score.

The Vikings will stay in Springfield to take on No. 8 Grand Valley State on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
