Vikings Dominate UMary in Straight Sets

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana defeated Mary 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17) on Thursday. The Vikings hit .364 with 50 kills while holding UMary to a .094 hitting percentage and 28 kills.

Augustana moved in front early, getting kills from Kelby Opland, Abby Gruber and Reagan Jansen before Julia Blom's ace made it 8-4. After Holli Klettheimer's kill brought UMary within three, Augustana went on a 7-1 run. The stretch featured kills from Gruber (2), Opland, Jansen, and Lucy Belisle, consecutive blocks by Gruber and Opland, and a Jansen serve to extend the lead to 15-6. UMary kept answering in stretches with kills from Dani Highum, Ruby Rengo, Klettheimer, and Judith Burke, but Augustana countered with kills from Gruber, Opland, Maya Wente, and Jansen to reach 21-13. From there, Opland started the closing stretch with a kill, Gruber added two more, and a UMary attack error helped the Vikings score the final four points for a 25-13 set win.

After UMary tied the second set at 4-4, Augustana moved back in front at 7-4 on a Marauders attack error, a Wente kill and a Clara Hoegh service ace. UMary cut it to 11-9 on consecutive Judith Burke kills; Jansen answered with a kill, and, after Dani Highum made it 12-10, Sydney Tims and Blom put down kills before a UMary attack error gave the Vikings a 15-10 lead. At 16-12, Augustana scored four straight points on three Wente kills and a Belisle kill to make it 20-12. Shelby Barwick added a kill and teamed with Wente on a block as the lead reached 22-13, and after Mary took two points back, Jansen put down kills for 23-15 and 24-16 before Kiylah Franke's service ace ended the set at 25-16.

Augustana built an early 8-2 lead in the third set behind kills from Tims, Belisle, Gruber and Wente, plus a Marauders' attack error. UMary answered with four straight points to pull within 8-6, but Augustana pushed back to 12-6 with two Wente kills and consecutive Jansen kills. After the Vikings extended the margin to 21-13, UMary scored four straight to make it 21-17 before Sylvia Taylor stopped the run with a kill. Alexis Nelson followed with a service ace, and Augustana finished the set 25-17 on a UMary attack error and a block by Wente and Barwick.
