SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana split its Friday slate, sweeping Chadron State 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) before falling in a five-set thriller to Emporia State (20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 14-16). The Vikings powered past Chadron State behind 54 kills and a dominant .345 hitting percentage compared to the Eagles' 37 kills and .252 clip, but couldn't hold off ESU later in the day despite out-killing the Hornets 67-63 and holding a .274 to .235 efficiency edge.

Augustana scored the first six points of the opening set during Kiylah Franke's opening service turn, getting kills from Sydney Tims, Reagan Jansen and Abby Gruber along with a service ace. Chadron State worked back into the set with a four-point stretch that cut the score to 8-6, then later tied it at 13-13 on consecutive Augustana attack errors. Augustana moved back ahead with kills from Gruber and Tims followed by a Jansen block. Late kills from Maya Wente and Lucy Belisle helped keep Chadron State from pulling even again. After a Franke block pushed the lead to 23-18 and a follow-up kill from Jansen, Franke finished the set with Jansen for a 25-19 Augustana win.

Augustana turned a 6-6 set into a 10-6 lead during Gabby Jones' serve, taking four straight points on the Eagles' attack errors. The teams traded points until Chadron State moved ahead 12-11 on a Kally Kirkwood kill, but Gruber put down two kills, Belisle and Tims added kills and Jansen served an ace to give Augustana a 16-12 lead. After Chadron State cut it to 16-14, the Vikings pushed the advantage to 21-14 behind three Tims kills, a Belisle kill and a Gruber ace. Chadron State pulled within 24-21 late, but Jansen's kill closed the set 25-21 for Augustana.

Belisle put Augustana in front with the first two points of the third set, but Chadron State tied it 3-3 on Avery Lacy's service ace before Wente's kill and back-to-back Jones aces helped Augustana move ahead 7-3. Chadron State cut the gap to 7-6 with kills by Kirkwood and Gibson Beckler and a block-assisted point, while Augustana kept separation through the middle of the set and used kills from Kelby Opland and Tims to reach 16-12. After Chadron State got within 16-14 on Kiera Alfred's ace, Augustana answered with a Gruber kill and a Belisle kill, and, after a Chadron State sideout, Gruber added a kill and an ace to make it 20-15. Tims added a kill at 21-16, Belisle recorded a block, and Wente supplied three kills among Augustana's final five points, including the final point, to finish the set 25-19.

After Augustana scored the first point, ESU moved ahead 3-1 on kills by Maja Ciosek and Mia Frisbie and an Augustana attack error, but a Gruber kill and an ESU error brought the set even at 3-3. ESU stretched the lead to 8-4 with a Piper Bahr kill, a Delainee Dexter ace and a block by Brooklynn Weaver and Jade Xu before Augustana worked back to 10-10 behind kills from Belisle, Jansen, Tims and Gruber. The teams traded points through two Wente kills and an ESU service error that left Augustana within 19-18, but ESU scored the next three points to go ahead 22-18. Jansen's kill and a block by Gruber and Belisle accounted for Augustana's final points before Dexter closed ESU's 25-20 set win with a kill.

After ESU pulled within 4-3, Wente's kill gave Augustana the serve, and Clara Hoegh followed with five straight service points as a block by Kelby Opland and Wente, kills from Wente and Opland, and a Belisle block helped build a 10-3 lead. ESU scored the next two points, but Augustana answered with four straight, including kills by Jansen, Opland and Wente, to move in front 14-5. The teams traded points through the middle of the set, with Jansen, Belisle and Tims adding kills as Augustana reached 21-12 on a Wente-Belisle block. Jansen delivered kills for the 23rd and 24th points, and an ESU attack error closed Augustana's 25-16 set win.

After ESU scored the first three points, Augustana pulled even at 3-3 with Jansen and Gruber kills around an ESU attack error. ESU moved back in front at 8-5, but Belisle and Wente kills started a six-point Augustana response that included three Jansen kills and an Opland/Wente block for an 11-8 lead. The set tightened from there, with ESU tying it at 11-11 and later moving ahead 19-18 before Jansen's kill from Julia Blom tied it at 19-19. Jones then served Augustana to five straight points, including three aces, and after ESU cut the margin to 24-22, Gruber and Franke combined on the block that ended the set 25-22.

Augustana built an early 4-0 lead in the fourth set behind kills from Gruber and Belisle and back-to-back service aces by Jansen, then pushed the margin to 9-4 after a Wente kill, an Opland kill, a Belisle block and another Belisle kill. ESU worked back into the set and tied it at 16-16 on a Delainee Dexter service ace, and after Augustana went back ahead 17-16, ESU scored four straight points to move in front 20-17. Gruber's kill, a Franke ace and Jansen's kill brought Augustana even at 21-21, and Gruber later tied the set again at 22-22. ESU closed with the final three points, finishing the set on Brooklynn Weaver's kill for a 25-22 win.

Wente delivered two kills and Opland added another, all from Franke, as Augustana scored the first three points of the fifth set. Augustana still led 7-2 after Belisle's kill and an ESU bad set, and the advantage reached 11-6 behind kills from Jansen and Opland around Jones' service ace. ESU came back from 12-8 with kills by Delainee Dexter and Maja Ciosek and a Piper Bahr ace to tie the set at 12-12. Jansen and Belisle answered with kills to put Augustana ahead 14-12, but ESU scored the final four points, taking the lead on Ciosek's kill and closing the fifth set 16-14 on an Augustana attack error.
