Augustana University Athletics

As of July 1, 2021, student-athletes competing in NCAA intercollegiate athletics are permitted to receive compensation for the use of their name, image or likeness (NIL) for commercial activities. This can include endorsements through traditional and social media, appearances, entrepreneurial activities, in-kind deals, autographs and more, in accordance with NCAA guidelines. The Augustana NIL policy can be found HERE. 

The policy provides the following guidance to college athletes, recruits, their families and member schools:

• Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions.
• College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in this type of activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image and likeness.
• Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities.
• Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school.

No, NCAA guidance prohibits any athletic department staff member from marketing, negotiating or securing an NIL activity on behalf of an Augustana student-athlete.

The F-1 visa limits international students to on-campus and limited off-campus employment. It is highly recommended that you consult with Augustana University's designated international student administrator for guidance related to maintaining your immigration status and tax implications if you consider involvement in NIL opportunities. Student-athletes must follow all Augustana University Licensing Policies, in addition to obtaining the proper rights for using the university’s name, marks, and logo. Please be aware this includes wearing and/or displaying Augustana University’s name, marks, or logos in any marketing, promotional, or social media content. Please direct any questions to the Office of Athletics Marketing. Use of university athletic and other facilities for NIL activities will follow the same process and rental rates as outlined for internal or external entities that request use of Augustana University facilities. No coach or staff member is allowed to authorize use of athletic facilities or equipment outside of standard university policy.

No, NCAA rules define an impermissible extra benefit as something (money, goods, etc.) received by a student-athlete receives which is not in exchange for work performed. The student-athlete would be deemed immediately ineligible and must go through the NCAA's reinstatement process before returning to competition.
