Newell, Behrens grab NSIC honors

NSIC RELEASE

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – A pair of Augustana football players picked up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekly honors Monday as Dajon Newell was named offensive player of the week and Drew Behrens was tabbed special teams player of the week.

The tandem helped Augustana post a 37-13 NSIC South Division win over Concordia University, St. Paul Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Newell, a redshirt freshman from Lakeville, Minn., tallied 203 rushing yards and scored one touchdown Saturday.   He registered his second-straight 100-yard rushing game in just his second collegiate start and eclipsed 200 yards on 22 carries. Newell averaged 9.2 yards per carry on the afternoon. He became the first Viking to rush for more than 200 yards since Oct. 4, 2008, when Joe Clark netted 208 yards on the ground against Minnesota State at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Newell also caught two passes for 11 yards and finished the game with 214 all-purpose yards.

A junior from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Behrens drilled a season-high three field goals (40, 39 and 32 yards) and was perfect on four point afters against CU. Behrens averaged 38.0 yards on five punts and 59.6 yards on seven kickoffs and had one special-teams tackle.

The Vikings have earned three weekly conference citations this year.  Nick Andreas was also named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 6.

Augustana (2-3, 2-2 NSIC) travels to Northern State (1-4, 0-4 NSIC) Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. conference contest.  Midco Sports Network will telecast the game live.
