Vikings Secure Winning Season with 54-6 Rout of Upper Iowa

The Augustana football team ended the 2005 season on a positive note by routing Upper Iowa 54-6 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Eischeid Stadium in Fayette, Iowa. The win improved the Vikings to 6-5 on the season, securing the team’s first winning season since 2002.

Augustana, which ended the season on a three-game winning streak, jumped on Upper Iowa (3-8) early with three first-quarter touchdowns. Tommy Flyger hooked up with Tommy Ellingworth on a 58-yard touchdown just over a minute into the game. Moments later, Dustin Rice intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first quarter.

Flyger and Ellingworth enjoyed strong afternoons. Flyger completed 21 of 30 passes for 293 yards and a school-record 6 touchdowns. Ellingworth, meanwhile, caught 8 passes for a career-high 153 yards and 2 touchdowns. In addition, he returned a punt 42 yards near the end of the first half to boost Augie’s lead to 41-0 at intermission.

Augustana dominated the statistics, amassing 485 total yards, compared to 220 for Upper Iowa. The Viking defense also shined, registering 6 sacks and forcing 5 turnovers, giving them 9 turnovers in their final 3 games.

Ryan Corcoran, playing in his final game as a Viking, led the Augie ground game, rushing for 81 yards on 16 carries. Flyger added 29 yards, while Ellingworth chipped in with 27 yards. Ryan Rothenberger hauled in 4 receptions for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Dan Klumper, another senior, caught 5 passes for 48 yards and one score.

Defensively, Clint Bresee had 11 tackles, while senior Drew Hilgenberg had 8. Rice, Matt Lien and Marcus Paulson had interceptions. In addition to his interception, Rice had 6 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, a quarterback sack and 3 pass break ups.
