MANKATO, Minn. - Augustana's mid-distance runners shined through on a day where the Vikings hit 10 provisional qualifying marks at the Ted Nelson Classic. The Vikings collected 46 top-eight places and eight Vikings won their events.
Harald Karbo and
Kyle Blakeslee both logged provisional marks while winning the men's and women's mile runs, respectively, while the two also took home their respective 1,000-meter run title.
Karbo led a quintet of Viking runners with a 4:12.18 in the men's mile, followed by
John Klecker -- who also posted a provisional mark of 4:13.77 -- and
Keegan Carda (4:23.65),
TJ Gleason (4:25.05), and
Adam Braun (4:26.70) finished 3-4-5. Karbo and Klecker again placed 1-2 in the 1,000-meter run with
Petter Gulliksen taking third and
Nathan Hauge in sixth.
Blakeslee hit her second provisional qualifying mark of the year with a 5:02.34 in the mile. Both Karbo and Blakeslee have reached qualifying marks in the 3,000-meter and mile runs.
Two more mid-distance runners placed 1-2 in their event under a qualifying time.
Aduo Omot edged out
Henrik Hansson by one hundredth of a second in the men's 800-meter run. Omot improved his qualifying mark to a 1:52.99 and Hansson took second on a photo finish with a 1:53.00 final time.
Kayla Mescher and
Emma Anderson both hit qualifying times in the women's 800-meter run, with Mescher taking second and Anderson finishing third. Mescher couldn't improve on her already-qualifying time in the same event with a 2:16.18 and Anderson shaved four seconds off her best 800 time with a third-place time of 2:16.18.
Three more qualifying marks were reached on the field side and all three were personal-bests for the athletes, including school record being broken for the third time this season.
CJ Ham continued to improve on his weight throw and shot put qualifying marks, breaking the weight throw record for a third time this season. Ham took second in the weight throw, with a best toss of 17.75 meters (58 feet, 3 inches) that broke his school record by over a foot.
In the shot put, Ham recorded a best throw of 16.02 meters (52 feet, 6.75 inches) to win the event and improve his qualifying mark by nearly a foot.
Already with the best mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, sophomore
Kelsey Kaufmann hit a personal best in the women's high jump, winning the event with a 1.73-meter (5 feet, 8 inches) jump.
Other highlights from the Ted Nelson Classic include
Carina Hofmeister winning the 200-meter dash (25.91 seconds) and placing second in the 400-meter dash (59.27 seconds),
Karmen Nyberg (fourth, 26.84),
Kirsten Nyberg (sixth, 27.01) and
Charissa Etrheim (eighth, 27.21) all placed in the 200-meter dash and Etrheim (1:00.82) also placed sixth in the 400-meter dash.
Calliann Brunswig won the women's long jump with a best mark of 5.03 meters and
Katie Tonner took second (5.00m; 16 feet, 5 inches), just three centimeters behind Brunswig, with
Janelle Paulson (4.72m; 15 feet, 6 incches) and
Melissa Barella (4.41m; 14 feet, 5.75 inches) placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Brunswig also took third in the 60-meter hurdles and Barella placed seventh in the women's 800-meter run.
Christine Campbell equaled her season-best in the triple jump with a 10.54-meter (34 feet, 7 inches) mark.
Justin Greenway and
Jason Greenway both placed in the top eight of the men's 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Justin took second in the 200-meter with a season-best 22.36-second lap with Jason placing eighth. However, Jason did place higher in the 60-meter dash with a 6.99-second run and Justin took sixth.
Justin Cook added the final event win for the Vikings, taking home the men's 600-meter run title with a time of 1:25.10.
Jake Connealy (1:26.88) placed third in the same event.
In the men's 400-meter dash,
Skyler Kuil and Jeremy Btzet both placed with a Kuil taking sixth (51.29 seconds) and Botzet finishing seventh (51.43).
The hurdles tandem of
Ryan Heuer and
Brandon Gildemaster both placed top-five in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Heuer placed third with a collegiate-best 8.39-second run and Gildemaster took fifth in 8.48 seconds.
Vaughn Thada placed in the men's high jump (fifth, 1.75m; 5 feet, 9 inches) and the men's triple jump (sixth, 12.11m; 39 feet, 8.75 inches).
Augustana now turns their focus to the Minnesota State Classic on Sautrday, Feb. 15 while the Vikings' multi-event athletes will compete at the NSIC Multi Event Championships in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 16 and 17.
