LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Harald Karbo clocked a provisional qualifying time while winning the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase on a windy day at the 87th Kansas Relays. Four total Vikings earned qualifying times as the Vikings concluded their three-day trip to the Free State.
"Winning a number of Kansas Relays titles and advancing a number of athletes to the finals is a great accomplishment for our program in this meet," Hellman said. "We are excited to bring this momentum into the Drake Relays next weekend."
Karbo cruised to a 12-second victory, running the steeplechase for the first time this season. The Stord, Norway native finished in 9:06.47 to earn his first qualifying time of the season. Teammate
Adam Braun ran to a fourth-place finish in 9:24.86 which also puts him in the running for the NCAA Championships.
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Kyle Blakeslee registered a provisional time with a runner-up finish, losing only to a Division I competitor. Blakeslee finished the race in 10:52.94 in hopes of earning a third All-American finish.
Kristin Brondbo opened the final day for the Vikings, finishing as the top Division II runner in the women's 1,500-meters and taking fifth. Brondbo's 4:34.67 is fast enough to earn her second provisional time of her senior campaign.
Jordan Slusser and
John Klecker followed with the men's 1,500-meter run and finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Slusser's time of 3:58.90 eked by Klecker's 3:59.07 to edge out his teammate.
Kayla Mescher and
Carina Hofmeister both earned spots in the finals of their respective events, but windy conditions prohibited them from improving on their qualifying times. Mescher took seventh in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a 1:03.99 time and Hofmeister clocked a 25.07-second run in the women's 200-meter dash to take ninth.
Mescher and Hefmeister also helped Augustana's women's 4x400-meter relay team to the finals, and they earned fourth place with a final time of 3:53.02.
Aduo Omot competed in the men's seeded 800-meter run, finishing 11th in 1:55.50.
Kristi Porter closed the Vikings' trip to Lawrence with a best throw in the women's javelin of 31.25 meters (101-10) and finished 20th.
