ST. PETER, Minn. – The Augustana men's tennis team dropped to Division III and currently 14th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 6-3 on Saturday. Augustana's record falls to 2-3 while the Gusties improve to 2-2 on the year.
Jared Hofer and
Collin Noldner supplied the Vikings only win at doubles play with a tight 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot.
Jackson Buchanan and
Zach Adkins dropped the No. 2 doubles to Gustavus' Zach Ekstein and Colin Rieke by a score of 8-4.
Trae Olson and
Colan Surratt lost at the No. 3 doubles match, 8-2. Augustana then entered singles play in a 2-1 hole before Hofer took the No. 1 singles spot in three sets over T. Connor Shives 6-7, 6-4, and 10-6.
Adkins also went into three sets at the No. 2 singles match but was defeated in a seemingly never-ending third-set tiebreaker -- the Augustana freshman fell 4-6, 6-3, and 10-5. Noldner was shutout at the No. 3 singles losing to David Hagberg 6-4, 6-3.
Buchanan fought hard pushing the No. 4 singles into three sets, but came up short losing 4-6, 6-4, and 10-7.
At No. 5 singles, Ritterbusch suffered a tough loss, 6-4, 6-1 followed by
Mark DeSpiegler closing out the match defeating Gabe Steinwand in three sets with a score of 6-4, 3-6, and 10-7.
The Vikings head back on the road for a pair of matches on Saturday, Feb. 21 in Grinnel, Iowa. Augustana will take on host Grinnell at 8:30 a.m. before taking on Central College at 12 p.m. to close out their trip.
