BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Augustana College track and field team took advantage of another day at the SDSU Open with three Vikings setting new school records and eight provisionally qualifying in their respective events on Saturday.
CJ Ham broke his own school record for a second time this season taking the top mark in the weighted throw provisionally qualifying with a heave of 19.04 meters (62 feet, 5.75 inches) ranked first in the NSIC. Ham also took fourth in the shot put provisionally qualifying with a throw of 16.02 meters (52, 6.75 inches).
Anne Parsley set a new school record in the women's 400-meter dash and provisionally qualified with a time of 56.29 for a third-place finish.
Irene Almarcha also hit a provisional mark in an event for the second time this season, breaking her current record in the 60-meter hurdles. Almarcha took third provisionally qualifying with a time of 8.66.
"Anytime you break three school records in one afternoon, it's a good day," head coach
Tracy Hellman said. "We still have some work to do in other areas to prepare for the conference championships and qualify individuals for nationals, but this weekend was a positive step in those directions."
In the women's 3,000-meter run,
Leah Seivert clocked a time of 9:57.68 to hit her first provisional qualifying mark of the season for a third-place finish.
Kayla Mescher took the top mark in the 800-meter run provisionally qualifying with a time of 2:12.20, while teammate
Emma Anderson took 10th with a time of 2:16.51.
Harald Karbo won the men's 3,000-meter run provisionally qualifying with a time of 8:20.17. Joining Karbo in the mid-distance event was
Paul Yak who missed a qualifying mark to come in fourth with a time of 8:29.11.
Also logging top-five finishes were
Mason Ford,
Ryan Heuer, and
Kaylynn Erlandson. Ford placed sixth in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 4.25 inches, while Heuer was the top Augustana finisher in the men's 60-meter hurdles provisionally qualifying with a time of 8.18 for a new personal-best time.
Erlandson set a new personal-record in the women's triple jump clearing (37 feet, 3 inches).
The Vikings now take a trip to familiar Mankato, Minn. for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi-Events on Sunday and Monday hosted by Minnesota State.
