BISMARCK, N.D. – The Augustana College women's tennis team took their undefeated Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to the road for the first time this season recording two more wins and a perfect 4-0 record in NSIC play. The Vikings took down U-Mary 9-0 in the 9 a.m. match then beat undefeated MSU-Moorhead with an 8-1 win in the afternoon contest.
Augustana 9, U-Mary 0In the first of their two matches, the Vikings handled the Marauders with ease, posting their fourth straight shutout win of the season. Starting with doubles, the Vikings built a 3-0 lead, surrendering just two games in the first three matches.
Jessa Richards and
Sydney Postal remain undefeated in doubles play with a dominating performance winning 8-0 at the No. 1 doubles.
Christine Olivo and
Heather Sullivan dispatched their No. 2 doubles opponents by an 8-2 margin and
Berkley Darr and
Meredith Lawrence gave the Vikings the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win at the third doubles flight.
Ricahrds then started the Vikings on their quest for a singles sweep, winning 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot. Postal secured the win for the Vikings with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 singles spot and Olivo took her No. 3 singles match by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 4, Darr posted her fourth win of the year, a 6-1, 6-2 win, followed by
Jenna Helleberg dominated her opponent winning 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles.
Lawrenece then put the finishing touches on the victory blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles to improve to 6-0 in competition.
Augustana 8, MSU-Moorhead 1Augustana defeated MSU-Moorhead, snapping the Dragons undefeated season with an 8-1 victory, and handing MSUM their first loss in NSIC play.
Richards and Postal again cruised in their No. 1 doubles match, notching their seventh straight victory with an 8-0 win. Olivo and Sullivan battled at the No. 2 doubles flight winning a close match, 8-4. Helleberg and Lawrence ensured a lead before singles play with their 8-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Vikings then dominated singles action in a dominating fashion. Richards was presented a challenge at No. 1 by Andrea Rognlien, but the junior and reigning NSIC player of the week came away with a 7-6, 7-5 win. Postal rolled at No. 2 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3.
Olivo lost at the No. 3 singles, falling in three-sets with scores of 7-5, 4-6, and 10-5. Darr finished the day with a 2-0 mark winning by a score of 6-0, 6-3 in her No. 4 singles match. Helleberg won in straight-sets at the No. 4 singles earning a 6-2, 6-2 win. Lawrence continued to roll in singles competition with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Augustana will be back on the road traveling to Bemidji, Minn. to take on Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. The Vikings take on Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. and then Bemidji State on Sunday, March 1 at 9 a.m.
