RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Augustana College women's tennis team knocked off Montana State University-Billings, 6-3 on Sunday evening.
Looking to bounce back from their first loss of the year this past Friday, Augustana's
Christine Olivo and
Berkley Darr defeated MSU-Billings Hannah Shephard and Jade Goodyear-Anderson, 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles.
Jenna Helleberg and
Meredith Lawrence teamed up at the No. 2 doubles winning 8-6, followed by
Heather Sullivan and
Kaitlyn Motley closing the door on their Yellowjacket opponents Ricquel Ramsbottom and Morgan Opp, winning 8-1. The Vikings went into singles competition leading 3-0.
MSU-Billings Morgan Opp put the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard at the No. 1 singles, due to injury on Augustana's part. Darr continued to play at a high level by defeating Hannah Shephard 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles.
Helleberg would not be as fortunate, falling at the No. 3 singles in three sets. The senior won the first set 6-0, but fell in set two 6-4 and was edged in the tiebreaker 10-8. Lawrence remains undefeated on the season in singles winning 7-5, 6-1. Sullivan notched the victory at the No.5 singles with her 6-1, 6-0 win.
Motley was the second Viking on the day to split the first two sets, later to fall in the tiebreaker 7-5 to the Yellowjackets Ricquel Ramsbottom to close out competition on Sunday. With the 6-3 win over the MSU-Billings, Augustana improves to 2-1 on the season.
The Vikings will face a Division I opponent on Friday, Jan. 13 welcoming Western Illinois to Woodlake Athletic Club at 5:30 p.m.
