Vikings cruise to 9-0 win over Upper Iowa on Sunday

WINONA, Minn. – Augustana College women's tennis battled through two tough doubles matches and several highly-contested singles matches to take down Upper Iowa 9-0 on Sunday.

The Vikings improve to 16-2 on the season and remain perfect in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition with a 9-0 record. The Peacocks fall to 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the NSIC.

The No. 1 duo of Jessa Richards and Sydney Postal battled back and forth winning the top doubles match 9-8 with a tie-breaker victory of 7-3.

Berkley Darr and Heather Sullivan were pushed to the brink in the No. 2 doubles match, but eventually broke through with an 8-5 win. The third-flight pairing of Jenna Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence coasted to an 8-2 win, giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead entering singles play.

In the No. 1 singles match, Richards battled against Iris Verweij taking the first set by ease with a 6-2 win. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native was tested in the second match, but came on top with a 7-5 victory.

Postal matched up against Saki Kawabata at the No. 2 singles match. Postal steadily put away the first-set with a 6-3 win, but Kawabata took the second set 6-3.  The battle continued in the tie-breaker with Postal coming on top with a 10-4 win.

Darr battled through a tough No. 3 singles match and emerged victorious but not without drama. Darr appeared to earn the key break late in the first set with a 7-5 win. Darr then dropped the second set 6-4 over Upper Iowa's Yamit Vodavoz. Darr came out on fire taking the tie-breaker by a score of 10-8.

At No. 4 singles, Helleberg was tested but the senior from Grand Island, Neb. came away with a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Lawrence used a quick pace to keep her opponent at bay and rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win to stay undefeated on the season.

Sullivan put the finishing touches on the perfect victory with a near shutout at the No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Augustana closes out NSIC competition hosting Minnesota Duluth on April 11 and St. Cloud State on April 12. Both matches will be at Woodlake Athletic Club.
