Olszewski announces changes to coaching staff for 2015

Jerry Olszewski announces changes to football coaching staff for 2015
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana head football coach Jerry Olszewski announced on Tuesday changes to the coaching staff for the 2015 season.

Chase King, who is entering his third season on Olszewski's staff, has been promoted to full-time status and will now coach the defensive backs. King spent the previous two seasons coaching the tight ends for the Vikings.

"Augustana football is excited to announce coach King as our new defensive backfield coach," Olszewski said. "Coach King has been with me for five years, most recently as a tight ends coach, and in that time I have watched him grow into an excellent teacher of the game with a tremendous work ethic and passion for our players. He has experience in every aspect of our program and will continue to be an incredible asset to our future success."

King takes over the full-time position that was vacated by Jordan Malone who was named the defensive backs coach at Minnesota State in June.

Former Viking wide receiver Matt McPhie, who coached running backs in 2014, will now coach the receivers.

"We feel blessed to bring back a successful Augustana Alumni to our coaching staff in coach McPhie," Olszewski said. "Matt did an excellent job coaching our running backs last season and will now take over our wide receivers. He brings maturity and a strong passion for Viking pride to a young group of talented receivers. I look forward to strong production from our wide receiver group under coach McPhie's tutelage."

Olszewski also announced that James Schrenk has been promoted to offensive coordinator and will now coach the quarterbacks. Schrenk is also the recruiting coordinator for the Viking football program and will begin his fifth season on staff in 2015. Schrenk spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons as the wide receivers coach, leading two All-NSIC selections. In 2011 and 2012, Schrenk coached linebackers, including 2012 NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-NSIC First Team selection Austin Luecke.

Matt Bacoulis is entering his third season as the offensive line coach at Augustana and will now be the Vikings' run-game coordinator. He has also been the team's video coordinator during his time at Augustana. Bacoulis tutored two All-NSIC Second Team selections in 2014 in Brian Long and Chris Mathieu and helped the offensive line pave the way for a record-setting offensive season last year. Augustana set a single season record in 2014 with 5,124 yards of total offense.

Kelly Scholten, a 1994 Augustana graduate, will begin his third season as the defensive line coach in 2015 and will now be the Vikings' special teams coordinator. Scholten guided an All-NSIC selection for the second straight season in Jake Lee in 2014. Lee earned All-NSIC First Team and All-Super Region Three Third Team honors in 2013 after setting career-highs in tackles (44), tackles for loss (11.0) and sacks (4.0).

Augustana football reports to fall camp on Friday, Aug. 14 and opens the regular season at Bemidji State on Sept. 5.
