Augustana lands 10 on All-NSIC Team; Trey Heid named Offensive Player of the Year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced the 2016 all-conference teams on Wednesday. Augustana senior quarterback Trey Heid was named the NSIC's Offensive Player of the Year and was one of 10 Vikings to earn All-NSIC honors.
 
Joining Heid on the All-NSIC South Division First Team are senior wide receivers Charlie Hayes and Matt Heller, defensive end Bryson Hamilton and linebacker Kirby Hora. Offensive tackle Kyle Griffin and linebacker Matt Wagner earned All-NSIC South Division Second Team honors while Sam Lee (offensive guard), Chris Mathieu (offensive tackle) and Joey Newman (defensive line) earned Honorable Mention honors.
 
Minnesota Duluth's Beau Bates was named the NSIC's Defensive Player of the Year while Max Simmons of Southwest Minnesota State earned NSIC Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors and USF's Delvin Batiste was named the Defensive Newcomer of the Year. USF head coach Jed Stugart was named the 2016 NSIC Coach of the Year.
 
Heid, a 6-foot-2, 199-pound quarterback from Lakeville, Minnesota, is the sixth player in NSIC history to earn NSIC Offensive Player of the Year honors twice in a career. He is the first player to earn NSIC Offensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons since Minnesota Duluth's Isaac Odim was awarded following the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Heid led the NSIC and set an Augustana single season record with 3,582 passing yards in 2016 while throwing for a league-high and single season record 41 touchdowns. He accounted for 51 total touchdowns on the season as he led the Vikings with 721 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Heid led the NSIC and the entire country averaging 391.2 yards of total offense per game in 2016. He passed for 250-plus yards in all 11 games in 2016, while throwing two or more touchdown passes in all 11 contests. Heid threw for over 300 yards in six games and tossed four or more touchdowns in 7 of 11 games. He finishes his career as the NSIC's all-time leader in total offense with 13,019 yards in 43 career conference games. He finished second all-time in NSIC history with 104 touchdown passes and third with 11,300 passing yards in NSIC play. Heid is Augutana's all-time leader in passing yards (11,476) passing touchdowns (105) and total offense yards (13,235). Heid is a two-time All-NSIC First Team selection. He was named All-NSIC Second Team in 2014.
 
Wide receiver Matt Heller, a senior from Lakeville, Minnesota, capped-off his career in a big way in 2016. Heller finished second in the NSIC and the country with 1,490 receiving yards this season while leading the conference and finishing second nationally with a single season record 21 touchdown catches. His 1,490 receiving yards is also a single season record at Augustana. Heller hauled in 100-plus receiving yards in 8 of 11 games in 2016, including 240-plus yards twice. He also caught a career-high three touchdowns in a game on five separate occasions in 2016. Heller finished his career at Augustana with 3,389 receiving yards while hauling in the most career touchdown passes in program history with 38. Heller is making his third appearance on the All-NSIC South Division team. He was a second team selection in 2015 and honorable mention in 2014.  
 
Charlie Hayes, a senior wide receiver from Lakeville, Minnesota, is making his second straight appearance on the All-NSIC First Team. After missing three games due to injury, Hayes finished the season hauling in 53 passes for 787 yards and six touchdowns. Hayes put up two 200-plus receiving yard performances on the season. He caught 15 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota State on Oct. 15 before catching 11 passes for 232 yards at Upper Iowa on Oct. 22. Hayes finished his career at Augustana catching 160 passes for 2,397 yards and 26 touchdowns.
 
Senior defensive end Bryson Hamilton (Clear Lake, Iowa) is making his second straight appearance on the All-NSIC First Team. Hamilton had a huge senior season for the Vikings before missing the final two games due to injury. He finished the year with 44 tackles, including a career-high and team-leading 11.5 tackles for loss. Hamilton also recorded a career-high 7.0 sacks on the season, finishing just one shy of the single season record at Augustana. He recorded two or more tackles in all nine games played, including a season-high nine against USF on Oct. 1. Hamilton played his final game at Kirkeby-Over Stadium on Oct. 29 where he suffered a season-ending injury but not before recorded four tackles and two sacks.
 
Kirby Hora, a sophomore linebacker from Sioux Falls, led the NSIC in tackles in 2016 with a career-high 110 tackles. He is making his second appearance on the All-NSIC team after earning Honorable Mention honors as a redshirt freshman last season. Hora ranked 30th in the country in total tackles at the end of the season while ranking fifth in the NSIC averaging 5.0 solo tackles per game. He registered 11 or more tackles in 5 of 11 games, including a career-high 16 tackles in the season-opener against Northern State on Sept. 3. Hora posted 13 tackles in back-to-back games against Minnesota Duluth and Sioux Falls on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 and closed-out the season with 11 at SMSU on Nov. 12. Hora recorded 6.0 tackles for loss this season and recorded his first career interception at SMSU in the season finale. He has recorded 185 career tackles in 22 career games played for the Vikings.
 
Kyle Griffin, a senior left tackle from Anoka, Minnesota, is making his second straight appearance on the All-NSIC team. Griffin was named All-NSIC Honorable Mention last season. Griffin started all 11 games in 2016 and helped the Viking offense set single season records for total offense (5,617 yards), passing yards (3,786 yards) and touchdowns (65). Griffin started 34 consecutive games over the last three seasons and has paved the way for the offense to set single season records in multiple categories in the past three seasons.
 
Matt Wagner, a sophomore linebacker from Sioux Falls, is making his first appearance on the All-NSIC team. Wagner finished the season ranked second on the team with 81 total tackles. He recorded 45 solo stops on the year, including 4.5 tackles for loss and half a quarterback sack. Wagner ranked second in the NSIC and 12th in the country with four forced fumbles in 2016. He also broke up two passes and recorded two quarterback hurries. Wagner recorded two or more tackles in all 11 games in2016, including double-digits in three games. He closed-out the season with a career-high 17 tackles in the season finale at SMSU.
 
Sam Lee, a junior from Blue Earth, Minnesota, started nine games at right guard for the Vikings in 2016. Lee helped the Viking offense set single season records for total offense (5,617 yards), passing yards (3,786 yards) and touchdowns (65). Lee has played in 30 games over the past five seasons, missing all of 2014 and all but three games in 2015 due to injury. Lee has helped pave the way for the offense to set single season records in multiple categories in the past three seasons.
 
Chris Mathieu, a senior captain from Humboldt, South Dakota is making his third straight appearance on the All-NSIC Team. Mathieu earned All-NSIC Second Team honors as a sophomore and junior for the Vikings. He has played in 41 career games on the offensive line for the Vikings, making 30 starts over the last three seasons at right tackle. He has helped the Viking offense set single season records for total offense (5,617 yards), passing yards (3,786 yards) and touchdowns (65). Mathieu has helped pave the way for the offense to set single season records in multiple categories in the past three seasons.
 
Joey Newman, a sophomore defensive end from Crooks, South Dakota, stared all 11 games for the Vikings in 2016. He finished the year with a career-high 30 tackles, including 13 solo stops. Newman recorded 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks on the year. He recorded at least one tackle in 10 of 11 games, including two or more in nine games. Newman recorded a career-high eight tackles in the season finale at SMSU on Nov. 12.
 
Augustana finished the season 8-3, including 5-2 in NSIC South Division play. The Vikings won eight-plus games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010. Augustana won eight games in 2008 and 2009 before winning a program best 11 in 2010.
 
Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Augustana University is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
