Baseball earns sweep of U-Mary in midweek doubleheader

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana (15-7, 6-0 NSIC) extended its season long winning streak to seven games after earning a sweep over the University of Mary (4-17, 2-7 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon at Karras Park. The Vikings defeat the Marauders 4-2 in game one and 13-3 in game two.

GAME ONE

After a scoreless first inning the Vikings earned the first run of game in the second. Patrick Fiala opened the inning by getting on base thanks to a U-Mary error. Tyler Field singled but later was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice that advanced Fiala to third. The Vikings capitalized on another U-Mary error as Zach Stecker attempted a pickoff at first base but overthrew the Cory Bassingthwaite.

Augustana added another run in the third inning when Justin Warne singled to the shortstop and then was brought home by Alex Fink who doubled to center field.

The final runs of the game came in the fourth inning when Kris Ashland connect with a pitch for a no doubter, 2-run home run, over the left field fence. Ashland's home run also scored Lucas Barry who doubled earlier in the inning while also giving the Vikings a 4-2 win in game one.

GAME TWO

The Vikings got on the board early and they got on the board often. Warne set the tone in the bottom of the first with a single and a stolen base. O'Donnell drove Warne in with a triple to left field. Alex Beals added two more runs in the inning with a double to left field scoring O'Donnell and Fink. Beals would later score on a single by Barry.

After not scoring in the second they added three more runs in the third when Beals hit a 3-run home run to left center and scoring Lucas Wilber and Fiala. The Vikings added another run in the fourth when O'Donnell scored of the bat of Fink.

Augustana didn't score in the fifth inning but just like they did following a zero run inning they scored three in the sixth. All three Vikings runs came on swing of the bat though when Fink hit a shot to deep left center field scoring O'Donnell and Warne.

The Vikings put the game away in walk-off fashion in the eighth inning when Barry hit the team's third home run of the day. Barry sent the ball to right field scoring Beals and giving the Vikings a 10-run mercy rule win by a score of 13-3.
