Volleyball remains perfect with their second 5-set win of the season

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. - Augustana volleyball (3-0) was resilient Saturday morning against Michigan Tech after falling into an early hole. With their backs against the wall most of the match, the Vikings battled to a five set win to stay perfect on the young season.

Augustana had an early start Saturday playing the first match of the day at 9 a.m. against Michigan Tech. The Vikings opened the match with an early 5-2 advantage but Michigan Tech didn't fold. The two teams traded points with neither team getting a lead greater than two until the final three points of the match that were won by the Huskies.

It was all Augustana in the second set as they got on the board early and often jumping out to a 6-2 lead. The Huskies made a little run to get to within two points at 9-7 but the Vikings were not going to allow Michigan Tech to come all the way back as they rattled off the next three points. The Vikings ended the set on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-15 and tie the match at a set apiece.

Set three was much like the second set, but instead of Augustana jumping out to the early lead it was Michigan Tech who opened with a 6-1 lead. The Huskies didn't allow Augustana back into the match as they took the set 25-13.

Knowing they had to have the fourth set Augustana chipped away at the early 6-3 deficit and then shut the door on Michigan Tech every time it looked like they were going to make a run. The
Vikings took their first lead at 7-6 and after an 11-11 tie Augustana began to make their run building their lead from one to nine before grabbing the 25-16 set win.
After earning their first 5-set win under head coach Dan Meske Friday the team had the confidence to do it again today. After an early 2-2 tie Augustana jumped on Michigan Tech for three straight points to take a 5-2 advantage. Following a Michigan Tech timeout the Vikings increased their lead to 8-3 before putting the Huskies away at 15-7 and earning their second 5-set win on the year.
