DES MOINES, Iowa – The Augustana women's tennis team took Division I Drake to the brink falling to the Bulldogs, 4-3, on Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa. The Vikings go to 0-1 on the season.
The Vikings started off the match in thrilling fashion by taking the doubles point. With playing at a Division I venue, doubles matches only pool together as one point and the Vikings took two out of the three matches to take the point.
The Bulldogs started out by taking No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-1, but the Vikings answered back with
Meredith Lawrence and
Kaitlyn Motley winning the No. 3 doubles match, 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles match was a highly contest match that went back-and-forth.
Kornelia Staniszewska and
Berkley Darr managed to force a tiebreaker and were behind early. The pair came back and secure the doubles point for the Vikings by winning the match 7-6 (7-5).
The Bulldogs won four of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Staniszewska supplied the Vikings with a comeback at No. 1 singles. Staniszewska dropped the first set 6-2, before taking sets two and three 6-3 and 6-1.
At No. 5 singles Lawrence had a comeback of her own. Lawrence dropped her first set, 3-6, before outlasting her opponent and winning sets two and three, 7-6 (8-6) and 1-0 (10-6).
The Vikings will open their NSIC Schedule next weekend against SMSU on Friday, Feb. 10 and against Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 11.
