SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana women's tennis team has a trio of matches this weekend, including trying to extend its 77-match winning streak against NSIC competition in the regular season. The Vikings enter the weekend 0-1 after falling to Drake last Sunday, 4-3.
The Vikings open the NSIC play on Friday hosting SMSU at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club with the match beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Vikings take on Minnesota State at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club starting at 7 p.m.
Augustana will wrap up the weekend in Minneapolis against Carleton College. The match will take place at Lifetime Fitness at 2:30 p.m.
Augustana
The Vikings are coming off of their seventh consecutive NSIC championship having gone 25-2 (11-0 NSIC). Augustana advanced to the NCAA Championships going 1-1.
The Vikings return reigning NSIC Player of the Year,
Kornelia Staniszewska, who went 20-1 last season primarily from the No. 1 singles position. Staniszewska is coming off of being named NSIC Player of the Week for her performance against Drake last weekend.
SMSU
SMSU enters the weekend with a record of 2-2. In the fall, the Mustangs fell to Morningside and Bethel University before defeating Buena Vista to conclude the fall season. The Mustangs opened the spring season with a victory over Hamline University on Feb. 5.
Last season, the Mustangs finished 2-15 (1-10 NSIC). SMSU is led by junior Jenna Gannott who is 3-1 at No. 5 singles this season. The top doubles pair for the Mustangs are Ashley Hoehne and Hannah Starke who are 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Minnesota State
Minnesota State goes into the weekend with a record of 0-1. The Mavericks lone match of the season came in September when they fell to St. Thomas, 9-0. The Mavericks matchup against the Vikings will be their first match of the spring season.
Last season, Minnesota State went 9-9 (7-4 NSIC), good for a tie for fourth in the NSIC.
Carleton College
Carleton comes into this weekend with a record of 1-0. The Knights defeated Saint Mary's on Jan. 29, 9-0 and will play Hamline University on Feb. 9 before their matchup with the Vikings.
Last season, the Knights went 15-5 and were MIAC champions. Carleton is led by Danielle Vasiliev who went 14-4 last season from the No. 1 singles position. The Knights also return top doubles pair of Vasiliev and Caitlin Shea, who went 7-3 at No. 2 doubles last season.
Next Up
The Vikings continue NSIC play next weekend, traveling to Bismarck, N.D. Augustana will take on MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Feb. 18 and will face off against U-Mary on Sunday, Feb. 19.
