MINNETONKA, Minn. – The top seeded Augustana women's tennis team opened its NSIC tournament title defense with a convincing 5-0 win over eighth seeded Minnesota Duluth. The Vikings moved to 14-5 (11-0 NSIC) on the year and upped their NSIC tournament winning streak to 17 consecutive matches and haven't lost in the NSIC tournament since the 2009-10 season.
Augustana got the match started by sweeping doubles.
Kornelia Staniszewska and
Berkley Darr at No. 1 doubles and
Meredith Lawrence and
Taylor Jackson at No. 2 doubles won by identical scores of 8-1. At No. 3 doubles,
Kaitlyn Motley and
Rebecca Falkner outlasted the Minnesota Duluth pair, 8-4.
The Vikings clinched the 5-0 win over the Bulldogs with two victories in singles play. At No. 4 singles,
Christine Olivo won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, against Kelsey Zetah. Falkner sealed the deal for the Vikings with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Katie Baasch.
The Vikings will play in the NSIC semifinals tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. in Minnetonka, Minn. at Lifetime Fitness Oakdale (Village Tennis). The Vikings will play the winner of No. 4 MSU Moorhead and No. 5 Minnesota State.
