MANKATO, Minn. – Olivia Montez Brown got the Augustana track and field team off to a good start for the postseason with a record breaking performance on Wednesday afternoon.
Montez Brown broke the NSIC record in the heptathlon with 5,140 points, besting former Augustana student-athlete and current graduate assistant
Bree Woelber previous record of 5,111 points. Woelber won the NSIC heptathlon crown last season.
Montez Brown's mark ranks sixth nationally and was a season's best point total for her.
Melissa Barella took 13th with a season's best mark of 3,563 points.
Montez Brown started the day off with a first place finish in the long jump. Montez Brown recorded a mark of 5.77-meters and earned 780 points. Barella finished in 13th with a mark of 4.57-meters, earning 446 points.
In the javelin, Montez Brown notched a personal best with a mark of 32.60-meters, good for fourth and 526 points. Barella took 13th with a toss of 20.13-meters and earned 291 points.
In the final event of the heptathlon, Montez Brown raced to a second place finish in the 800-meters, earning 764 points with a time of 2:24.43. Barella finished in seventh with a season's best time of 2:34.41 and earned 639 points.
The Vikings return to action on May 5-6 hosting the Howard Wood Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
