SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Augustana tennis coach Marc Kurtz announced on Wednesday that he signed two student-athletes to his 2019 signing class. Tyson Cowger (Kansas City, Mo.) and Emily Granson (Coaldale, Alberta) are Augustana tennis' newest Vikings.

On the men's side, Tyson Cowger played at Liberty High School and was first team All-State in 2018 after going 15-1 in singles and finishing in third place at the state tournament. Cowger has been first team all-conference in singles and doubles the last two years. Cowger posted a 29-5 doubles record last season when he and his partner repeated as district doubles champions.

"Tyson is an all court player who has singles and doubles experience," Kurtz said. "He has a solid game from the back-court and he's very comfortable around the net. He's a hard worker and is not only talented on the tennis court but also in the classroom. He will be a great addition to our roster for next season and we are excited to have him join the team in the fall."

Cowger Plans to minor in Spanish but is unsure of what his major will be. Post Graduation plans include earning an MBA after graduation and getting into a career in sales or management.

On the women's side, Emily Granson is an accomplished player as well. Granson attended Kate Andrews High School. Granson placed fifth in doubles and thirteenth in singles at the Canadian Roger Junior Nationals. Granson also holds two singles and two doubles championships in Alberta's Provincial Championships. Granson also has experience in the United States where she holds multiple USTA and UTR titles in the states of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon.

"Emily is a great athlete and a very solid tennis player with excellent ground strokes," Kurtz said.   "She's a grinder who has the potential to turn some of her shots into major weapons. Emily will benefit greatly from being around other strong players on a daily basis and I think her game will continue to improve while she is here at Augie.  She's another excellent student and will fit in perfect at Augustana. I'm really excited to welcome Emily to Augustana and the sky's the limit with her potential."

Granson plans to study Biology at Augustana.
