BOX SCORE San Juan, P.R. -- The Augustana women's team opened with a phenomenal showing in their Puerto Rico tournament, rolling to a 77-37 win over UPR Rio Piedras.
The story of the game was the Vikings ability to control the glass and tempo on both ends. Augustana finished with a team single game high 63 rebounds, the last time over 50 rebounds happened was 52 vs. Lake Superior State (11/25/17). Over all the Vikings had 11 student-athletes get into the scoring column and
Izzy Van Veldhuizen led the way with 15 points, one assist, and three steals.
During the first ten minutes the Vikings defense forced UPR Rio Piedras to nine turnovers. The 32 first quarter points put the Vikings ahead 32-10.
The tenacious defense did not let up in the second quarter, Augustana only allowed five points from UPR Rio Piedras, while the Vikings scored 11. The aggressive Viking defense forced tough shots by the UPR Rio Piedras, which was held to  to 5 of 36 from the field.
The Vikings had great first half shooting from the field, going 16-40 (40 percent) from the floor, 5 of 17 from beyond the arc.
Coming out of the intermission, the Vikings scored 27 third quarter points while holding UPR Rio Piedras to just 13 points. The fourth quarter proved to be no different as the Vikings never gave UPR Rio Piedras a glimpse of winning.
Vishe' Rabb and
Shelby Selland also scored 11 points. Selland led the team with nine rebounds.
Augustana now tips off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (AST) against Central Oklahoma at the Puerto Rico Classico.
