Women’s Tennis Pulls Off Exciting Region Win over Nebraska Kearney

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- In arguably their toughest match of the season to date, the Augustana women's tennis team defeated region foe Nebraska Kearney, 5-3, and improved their win streak to 11 consecutive matches Saturday night inside the Greatlife Woodlake Athletic Club.

"Wow, what a match. This was a huge regional match and the women came out ready to play," head coach Marc Kurtz said. "This was a total team effort and I'm really proud of the fight that we showed up and down the lineup. We need to use this win and keep the momentum going forward as we head into our spring break trip." 

Senior Berkley Darr and junior Kornelia Staniszewska defeated Yuxiu Sun and Zhanel Turabek at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, while Grace Goble and Anca Rusu earned the 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. 

Augie took three of the five singles matches, led by Staniszewska who took down Royo 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Jackson knocked off Nebraska Kearney's Yuxiu Sun 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Teske earned a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Emma Neil at No. 5 singles. Anca Rusu's match when unfinished after she was leading Faith Kowalski 6-1.

With the win, Augustana improves to 11-1 overall on the season. The Vikings return to action when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to take in Shippensburg on March 12 for their spring break trip. The time of that contest is still to be announced.
