SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana Women's tennis team hosted their first tournament of the season on Saturday, and the Vikings defended the Huether Tennis Centre well as they came away with wins in every match they participated in against the University of Mary and the University of Sioux Falls. Due to Augustana's success on day one, the Vikings matched up with their own teammates in the flight championships. Instead of playing against each other, Augustana head coach
Marc Kurtz decided to not play the title matches and give the team Sunday off.
Kurtz, now in his 14th-year, is pleased with the results, how his team played, and is looking forward to the next challenge for his program. "I thought we had a solid day of play with the team." Kurtz said. "We were able to squeeze all our matches into one day and all of our players won every match that we played in. Â We found and discussed some things that we need to work on, especially in doubles and we will try to go over those things this week in practice. We need to have a strong couple days of practice to get us ready for the ITA tournament in Oklahoma City this weekend."
The Vikings'
Kornelia Staniszewska, NSIC went 1-0 in flight 'A' singles defeating Tasha Dembo of U-Mary (6-1, 6-0). Also in flight 'A',
Anca Rusu and Arce Vierya both went 1-0, knocking off Megan Quandt (USF) and Kelsey Lejom (Mary).
In flight 'B' singles
Taylor Jackson and
Grace Goble both went 2-0, knocking off their opponents with identical 6-0 and 6-1 wins in round one, and then defeating second round opponents 6-1 and 6-3.
In flight 'C' singles, it was more of the same for Augustana with
Annika Teske and
Rebecca Falkner both going 2-0.
In flight 'A' doubles, Staniszewska and teammate Laura Arce Vieyra went 2-0 with 8-3 and 8-0 victories over U-Mary and USF respectively. In flight 'B' doubles Jackson and Teske went 2-0, scoring 8-4 and 8-0 victories over USF and Mary respectively. Finally, in flight 'C' doubles, Goble and Rusu went 2-0 with 8-0 sweeps over the USF and Mary duos.
The Vikings will conclude their fall schedule next weekend at the ITA Central Regional in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Thursday, September 27-Monday October 1.
